Why Your Resume Isn't Getting Past Automated Or Human Pre-Screening

Why does your?resume?fail to get through the?ATS or human pre-screening?when you apply on job boards, career pages, LinkedIn, or when your networked?resume?gets re-routed to?HR?


You're doing what you were taught by outplacement and most career coaches/authors, what your friends/mentors recommended, or what worked in your last job search, but it's still failing to get you interviews. Is that?resume?you paid professional?resume?writers to write for you are still getting blocked by?ATS, even when they were supposed to be?ATS?compliant?


Here are a few common reasons your?resume?fails to get you through automated and human pre-screening:


  1. Applying With A Stored Resume:?When you apply with a resume you stored on a job board, company career site, or your LinkedIn profile, you aren't modifying it for the individual position. Don't fool yourself that this works if you're applying to the same job title - each hiring manager has individual needs. You aren't even trying to show you meet an employer's needs with a stored resume.
  2. Applying With A Resume Template:?Same as above - you're not even trying.
  3. Not Enough Customization:?The more time you invest in customizing your resume, the better chance you'll get through the ATS.
  4. Using The Job Description:?It's gives you zero advantage over other job seekers, and worse it almost never reflects the hiring manager current needs. You're showing you meet last year's needs, not current needs. This includes when you use JobScan - The words it recommends are based on the job description (which isn't current), so the keywords aren't current either.
  5. Resume Formatting:?The formatting of your resume may cause it to load incorrectly into resume pre-screening databases, or be rejected outright. This happens even to resume written by many professionals, even ones who claim your resume will be ATS compliant.


You would be a great new hire, but you're still not going to land many interviews wen you use advice from outplacement and most career coaches/authors, based on random applications, volume, and luck.
