Why is Your Project Manager Not Working Out For You?

It’s surprising how often we hear businesses & agencies that have project managers, only to learn that the founder is doing most of the tasks that are the responsibility of the project managers.?

In this case, there are principle 2 reasons why this is happening:

The first is that the company doesn’t feel comfortable enough to delegate & let go of these responsibilities. If the project manager is in fact qualified & experienced, then this is often due to trust issues from the business owner. It sometimes doesn’t matter how amazing the employee may be, the management just has trust issues or tends to micromanage & then they end up over-working because they are trying to be project managers while growing the business at the same time. It’s hard to let go at first because often we owners feel that we know what is best for the company or the best response to our beloved client. But you just need to remember, that just because somebody does something in a different way or uses a different approach, doesn’t mean it is wrong. If you don’t learn to let go, your business will never scale.?

Now if the project management issue is not due to the previous reason, then it probably is your project manager. It’s important to understand what you are looking for in this role. For example, some businesses are run using a very strict process to follow, in which case a project manager with years of experience in agile development may not do well in this role. Or vice versa, if you have somebody who is used to a structure & now has to strategize custom app solutions, they may not fare so well. At the end of the day (once you move on from your trust issues) you need to have somebody you feel 100% comfortable talking to the clients on their own, otherwise, why are you paying a project manager?
