Why Your Next Career Move Should Be Finding a Mentor

Why Your Next Career Move Should Be Finding a Mentor

Looking back at my career journey, I can trace every significant breakthrough to conversations with mentors who saw something in me that I couldn't yet see in myself. But here's what they don't tell you about mentorship: The best mentoring relationships aren't just about advice-giving.?

They're about:?

- Having someone who's walked your path and can point out the potholes before you step in them?

- Getting honest feedback from someone who's invested in your growth, not your performance review?

- Building confidence through "borrowed belief" - when someone successful sees your potential, you start to see it too?

- Expanding your professional network through someone who's already built theirs?

- Learning from their mistakes so you don't have to make them all yourself?

The trick? Finding a mentor isn't about formally asking "Will you be my mentor?" It's about building authentic relationships with people whose career paths inspire you. Start with simple questions. Show genuine curiosity. Be respectful of their time. Add value where you can. Most importantly: Don't wait until you "need" a mentor to start building these relationships.?

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.?

Who's been your most influential mentor? Take a moment to tag them and share how they impacted your journey.?

Insightful and true. You are someone who has been looking for mentors (and been a mentor) for years. The beautiful thing about a mentor is that sometimes they need to be mentored, too. And that’s what you have done for me. At one point I was your mentor but you’ve been mine as well.
