As someone who has helped revamp thousands of LinkedIn profiles to date, I've noticed that many job seekers make the same mistakes over and over again. Here are the top three mistakes I regularly encounter:
Weak headlines:
When I come across a LinkedIn profile with a weak headline, I know the person is missing out on a big opportunity to showcase their expertise. As a career coach, I advise my clients to avoid generic headlines like "Experienced Marketing Manager" and instead be more specific and creative. Your headline is the first thing potential employers and recruiters see, so make sure it's attention-grabbing and showcases your skills.
Incomplete or outdated profiles:
I can't tell you how many LinkedIn profiles I've come across that are incomplete or haven't been updated in months or even years. This sends a message that you're not serious about your career. As a job seeker, your LinkedIn profile is your personal brand, so make sure it's professional and up-to-date. Include a professional photo, a summary that highlights your skills and experience, and a list of your current and previous positions.
Lack of impact/value:
As a potential employer, I'm always looking for candidates who can bring value to my organization. Your LinkedIn profile should highlight your achievements and the value you can bring to a potential employer. Instead of just listing your responsibilities, provide examples of how you have made a positive impact in your previous roles.
Share content, articles, or videos that demonstrate your expertise and passion for your industry. By showcasing your skills, experience, and value, you'll stand out from other job seekers and increase your chances of getting noticed by potential employers.
