Why Your Facebook Fans Need to “Fall in Love” With You

Why Your Facebook Fans Need to “Fall in Love” With You

Let’s go back to the good ole days of grade school. I understand that may have been some time ago for some, but humor me. Do you remember your first crush? – That cute boy or girl you couldn’t stop thinking about. How they smiled or styled their hair.

You drew your crush’s name next to yours in hearts and wrote love letters you knew you would never show them. You would daydream about them thinking of you in class and you happened to somehow always be at your locker the exact moment they passed. It may seem a little creepy when you reflect on it now but believe it or not this is exactly how you want your Facebook audience to feel about you!

Importance of Becoming the Crush

According to analysis from Ogilvy & Mather, only 6% of fans actually see your content and approximately 2% visit your page. Yikes! Let’s break down why those embarrassing childhood crushes I had you relive are important to your business.

Thanks to Facebook’s algorithm, EdgeRank, users’ NewsFeeds are categorized by what’s deemed “most important.”  Factors determining this rank are time decay, weight, and affinity. So why do posts that aren’t the newest or have the least amount of activity often appear at the top of your NewsFeed? One word: affinity.

Understanding Affinity

Affinity measures the strength of the relationship a user has with your page. The more a fan visits your page, clicks on your posts and either shares, comments or likes your posts, the higher the affinity score will be, which leads to you appearing predominately on their NewsFeed. This is the core reason you want your audience to have a “crush” on your business.

So how do you attract crushes? Easy, just like your childhood heartthrob, be the business that everyone wants to be with. In terms of Facebook, always be posting content that is intriguing, relevant and evokes an emotional response in order to drive action!

The exact science behind Facebook’s EdgeRank is unknown and guarded tightly by the social media giant, but there’s no doubt that affinity is an essential element in determining your rank. At the end of the day, it all revolves around engagement.
