Why Your Email List Should Be Top Priority (And Why It’s Cheaper Than Social Media)

Social Media is designed to be addictive. We know this and scroll for hours anyway. Everyone is hoping to gather more followers, likes, and comments. While this may have helped your business or ego in the past, it comes at a cost. Your followers, the ones you worked hard to gather are being held hostage by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap, LinkedIn and YouTube. In order for all of your followers to see your content, you must pay the ransom. It’s only fair, they built the free platform after all. Yet it’s frustrating to pay to speak to your customers. That is why your email list is the most sacred asset in digital marketing.

By creating a list of your customer’s emails, you control when you can speak them— all of them. No need to boosting this post to get your message out. Even better, you can segment email lists to target Previous Customers, New Leads, etc.

Email is more personal than social media. It’s the modern equivalent to your home address— you wouldn’t give that out to a stranger at the bar? But sure, you can follow me on Twitter, I can always block you later. Email is sacred. This is why for every $1 spent on email marketing yields $32 in return on average, according to The DMA UK Ltd report.

I’ve been a content strategist for a few years now and have seen better results when we focused on email marketing. I don’t have to worry about Facebook changing their algorithm or wait for ad approval by Twitter. It certainly isn’t easier. Email is what Seth Godin calls “a permission asset.” Do I have permission to bother you? This is too often abused by companies large and small.
