Why Your Data Strategy Might Be Stuck—and How to Move Forward

After 15 years in the data industry, one challenge has stood out repeatedly: reaching the end of a year and realizing that, despite a great data strategy, awesome buzzwords, new tools, and extra resources, an organization’s ability to use data hasn’t improved. It can sometimes feel like we’re moving backward.

Reflecting on countless data strategy meetings, I realized that we often focus too heavily on fixing today’s issues. While critical, this approach can keep us from asking an equally important question: Where do we want to be in three years?

With this in mind, I developed the Data Ecosystem Vision Board, a framework to align data capabilities today with the goals of tomorrow. This board helps unify teams, prioritize future-ready solutions, and ensure that each step in our data journey is intentional and impactful.

The three layers of the data vision board

Why This Matters to You:

I’ve spoken with many CTOs, CPOs, CMOs, and CEOs over the years, and a common theme emerges: despite substantial investment in data, the returns often feel disproportionate. Teams feel like they’re constantly migrating from one system to another, and with each new layer of technology or process, the problems seem to grow bigger. This constant cycle of reorganization leaves organizations frustrated and uncertain about their data’s true value.

The Data Ecosystem Vision Board addresses this by focusing not just on the present, but also on where you want to be in three years. It helps you step back, evaluate your current situation, and set the groundwork for a data strategy that brings real, measurable impact.

What You’ll Gain:

By using this framework, leaders will:

  • Gain clarity on where your organization stands today in terms of data and where you need to be in the future.
  • Understand the ‘why’ behind the data priorities set today, giving you a sense of assurance that your data strategy is moving in the right direction.
  • Track progress on your data culture and its impact on the organization, ensuring that investments align with long-term value.
  • Align teams around a shared vision and break down silos between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

With a clear vision and actionable roadmap, you’ll have the confidence that your data strategy is not only addressing today’s challenges but is also positioning you for future growth.

The Data Ecosystem Vision Board is more than just a tool—it’s a shared language that bridges technical and non-technical perspectives. It’s a “living document” that evolves with your organization, turning data from a fragmented puzzle into a powerful business asset.
