Why your consultancy isn't ready for AI (yet)

Why your consultancy isn't ready for AI (yet)

The allure of AI is hard to ignore.

Every day, we see headlines proclaiming that artificial intelligence is revolutionising industries, promising unprecedented efficiency, innovation and insights.

But before you jump on the AI bandwagon, it’s worth taking a step back. The reality is that many consultancies aren’t ready to fully leverage AI just yet - not because AI isn’t powerful, but because they haven’t mastered the basics.

The temptation of AI in consultancy

AI has captured the imagination of the consultancy sector, with many viewing it as the next big leap forward. From automating routine tasks to generating complex insights, AI offers a range of tools that can enhance the consultancy process. However, it’s easy to get swept up in the hype and overlook the essential groundwork that needs to be in place first.

The basics still matter

Before you consider integrating AI into your consultancy, it’s crucial to ensure that your foundational technologies are robust and fully utilised.?

Surprisingly, many consultancies are still relying on outdated methods like spreadsheets for critical tasks such as pipeline management, partner relationships and resource allocation. While Excel might be your ride-or-die, it's time to admit it's more "die" than "ride" for tasks like pipeline management.

For instance, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems can streamline your interactions with clients and partners, making it easier to manage your pipeline and forecast sales. These systems don’t have to be expensive - there are many cost-effective or even free options available that can provide significant value.

Similarly, resource management tools can help optimise your team’s time and effort, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

AI as a tool, not a replacement

AI can quickly analyse vast amounts of data, identify patterns and suggest strategies, but it lacks the nuanced understanding and creative problem-solving abilities that experienced consultants bring to the table.?

It's more like a super-powered intern than a replacement for your years of expertise. AI can crunch numbers faster than you can say "billable hours," but it can't replicate your finely-honed ability to read a room or your knack for turning a client's frown upside down.

Defending the human advantage

Consultancies must be prepared to defend the value of human intervention. You must be able to articulate to your clients why human-led consultancy still matters. If AI can do your job, what’s stopping your clients from bypassing your services altogether?

Position yourself as the indispensable human element that AI simply cannot replace, invalidating AI-only solutions by emphasising the irreplaceable value of human insight, creativity and strategic empathy.

Once you’ve got these core processes dialled in, you can start leveraging AI to take your business to the next level. AI can do a lot of heavy lifting, but it can’t replace the human touch. Make sure your clients know that.

This advice can be applied to more than just consultancy firms. AI's real potential lies in transforming and elevating your business. However, trying to do this while still using outdated tools and methods elsewhere is like trying to run before you can walk. Thanks for sharing, Matt.

Matt Hodkinson great article. As a former Big 4 alumni (x4?) I have leveraged Gen AI as a force multiplier that nearly replaces the enterprise artifacts and resources. It increases efficiency by many factors in many dimensions and enables more effective application of consulting skills. A downside - it enables late night what if analysis.
