As a job seeker or a professional seeking a career change, there is one important element you need to secure if you want your search to be successful – CLARITY.
Clarity is what defines who you are, what you have to offer, what you want your career to be like and what you want your future to be like. It’s what keeps you going in your career direction because when you’re clear about everything you want and need to do, it’s as if nothing can possibly stop you!
I talked a bit about clarity or being clear about who you are as one of the 8 Characteristics All Successful Job Candidates Share (check out #2). This time, we’re going to further elaborate on the idea of clarity, why it’s important when you want to change your career and what you can do to attain it.
For the fresh graduates out there or even those still in school, have you ever questioned what your next step was after graduating? What companies do you want to try getting into? What career can best maximize all you learned during the course you took?
For professionals who may already be in a job, do you feel you’re getting what you deserve? Is your current career situation making you feel happy and fulfilled? If not, then why? And what can you do to change that?
Some of you may not have all the answers, or you may have your answers, there’s still this little hint of doubt in your mind asking if that’s really it. During the transformative period of looking for a job or making a career transition, it can be easy to fall into confusion, discouragement and hesitation.
Preventing you from being lost and confused is the main reason why clarity is so important, but remember that it also affects how you network and how other people perceive you. Without clarity, not only will marketing yourself be difficult, but it’ll also be difficult for people (especially your network) to help you with referrals or opportunities if you’re not sure of yourself.
To further emphasize on how valuable having clarity is, here are the 4 benefits you get from it:
1) More Confidence
When you believe in yourself, you know what you have to offer and you know you have what it takes. When you feel confident, it’ll show in the way you carry or present yourself around people. Confidence won’t just translate into your actions; it’ll translate into your words as well. When you speak more confidently, you sound more credible and trustworthy.
2) More Courageous
Being clear gives you a stronger push into taking more bold moves and risks as it becomes easier to deal with your doubts and fears. Adapting and even embracing change becomes easier, you’ll find yourself always giving your best, and you’ll be more willing to go out and network!
3) More Compelling Communication
Communication skills is one of the top skills employers look for. When you have clarity, you become less wishy-washy when delivering your message. You become more interesting, inspiring and impressive. As a result, you sound more convincing.
4) Concrete roadmap and plan
With clarity, you have a greater sense of direction and purpose of where you are heading. You know what you need to do to become more marketable and generate more opportunities. In a way, having clarity is like having a career GPS – with it, you get to your ideal career destination a lot faster!
My top tip for gaining clarity is to take time to do inner work, or reflect and dig deep into yourself.
A few other actions you can do are:
- Buy and Read Self-Help Books – there are plenty of books that aren’t even expensive and it serves as a great kick start for gaining clarity. I would recommend grabbing a copy of Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle Laporte.
- Register and Attend a Personal Development Training Program – it’s like taking a step higher than reading self-help books. There are several programs that can give you highly experiential learning where you may even have a breakthrough. I recommend reading on and signing up to Unleash the Power Without with Tony Robbins.
- Hire a Career Coach – a career coach can provide guidance and advice for you to go deeper in your personal situation and help you see things in a different perspective. Coming up with a clear plan of action is also easier with a coach, and that coach will be sure to hold you accountable or make sure you put your plan to good use so you don’t lose your momentum. In short, coaches are there to challenge and champion you towards a successful career.
