In a small village in India, there is an old folktale about two neighboring kings who once ruled vast stretches of land. King Vikramaditya and King Virendra had been friends for years, and their territories flourished due to this strong bond. One day, a fierce storm caused severe damage to the boundary between their kingdoms. Fields were ruined, and neither side could afford a prolonged recovery without the help of the other. Though both kings were concerned about their territories, they trusted one another deeply.
Without hesitation, King Vikramaditya sent aid to King Virendra, despite the fact that he had his own troubles. Virendra reciprocated by opening his granaries and resources to Vikramaditya. Because of this mutual trust, both kingdoms recovered faster than expected, and their friendship grew stronger. The neighboring regions marveled at how the kings had prospered together, thanks to the trust they had built.
But what if that trust didn’t exist? If either king had doubted the other’s intentions, both kingdoms might have descended into suspicion, causing division and ruin. This story demonstrates that trust is the invisible thread that holds relationships, whether personal or professional, together.
Without trust, everything begins to unravel.
What is Trust?
Trust is a simple yet profound word, encompassing the confidence we have in someone’s character, abilities, and intentions. It’s the firm belief that people will act in ways that are predictable, reliable, and aligned with our mutual interests. In organizational settings, trust allows teams to collaborate effectively, communicate openly, and innovate fearlessly.
Trust isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s the foundation of all successful organizations.
Without trust, individuals doubt each other’s intentions, information flow becomes constrained, and morale diminishes. Stephen M.R. Covey, in his book The Speed of Trust, highlights that trust can be viewed as either a "dividend" or a "tax" within organizations. When trust is present, everything moves faster, with greater ease and efficiency—leading to a trust dividend. However, when trust is lacking, every interaction feels slower and more costly, creating a trust tax.
Can trust have a formula? Yes indeed!
Trust = Reliability + Credibility + Intimacy
The Trust Equation is a helpful framework for understanding trust in relationships, particularly within organizations. It consists of three key components: reliability, credibility, and intimacy.
When these three components are in place, trust flourishes. If any of them are missing, it can severely impact the overall trust in the relationship.
Trust as the foundation of a successful team
Patrick Lencioni, in his book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, identifies trust as the foundation of any successful team. According to Lencioni, the absence of trust leads to fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results—ultimately creating dysfunction in a team.
In his model, trust enables vulnerability among team members, which means that people are comfortable being open about their weaknesses, mistakes, and concerns. Without trust, teams indulge in guarded communication and hesitation, which stifles productivity and innovation. The most effective teams are those that foster deep levels of trust, allowing each member to contribute freely and without fear of judgment.
Lencioni’s work aligns closely with Franklin Covey’s assertion that trust speeds up processes and reduces friction within organizations. In both frameworks, trust is not merely a "nice-to-have" but a critical component for success.
Building Trust: Becoming Reliable, Credible, and Intimate
How can we actively build trust?
Trust is the cornerstone of every strong relationship, whether personal or professional. It fuels collaboration, enables innovation, and allows organizations to thrive. As Franklin Covey and Patrick Lencioni have shown, trust is both an accelerator and a foundation for high-performing teams. Without it, progress slows, and dysfunction creeps in.
Start building that foundation of trust today, and watch as it transforms your team’s performance and culture for the better.
Without trust, we don’t truly collaborate; we merely coordinate or, at best, cooperate. It is trust that transforms a group of people into a team." – Stephen M.R. Covey
