Why Your 50 Job Applications Go Unanswered!??

There is nothing more discouraging than sending out numerous job applications only to be met with silence. In this newsletter, we aim to uncover the underlying reasons behind unanswered job applications and provide insights to help you improve your job search process. There could be multiple factors contributing to this issue, and we're here to help you better understand them. By gaining a deeper understanding of these factors and implementing targeted strategies, you can make quick changes to your approach and increase the likelihood of receiving more responses.?

1: The Ineffectiveness of Spray and Pray

It's the method of going into rapid fire mode, spraying CVs out everywhere and praying you’ll land a job.?Don’t do it. Rapidly firing off countless CVs with hopes of landing a job rarely yields positive results. With employers receiving an overwhelming number of applications, it's no wonder most online submissions never reach human decision-makers.

2: Ignoring the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

The ATS plays a critical role in the hiring process. Failure to optimize your CV with relevant keywords can lead to your application being overlooked by both the ATS and recruiters. To succeed in the first screening, use the job advertisement as a reference. If the job advertisement says that the employer is looking for an experienced professional who is "competent in data analysis", use the phrase "competent in data analysis" (assuming you are!) in your CV. Improve your CV with our CV checklist here .

3: The Power of a Targeted Employer Strategy

Developing a targeted employer strategy is essential for job seekers. By identifying the companies you aspire to work for and understanding their unique needs, you can tailor your applications to stand out. And employers, hiring managers will rapidly notice the difference between a candidate tailoring and targeting his applications and a candidate who is just bombarding CVs.

To create a target employer strategy:

Start by making a list of companies you want to work for. Research each company in depth. Find out their mission, values, and what they’re looking for in an employee.

4: Poor personal brand

In the digital age, it is increasingly important to have a strong social media presence, particularly on LinkedIn, when it comes to job hunting. Your personal brand on LinkedIn can greatly influence your chances of landing that final round of interviews, or even landing the job. Potential employers often look at candidates' LinkedIn profiles to get a sense of their career history, skills and overall reputation. Neglecting to cultivate a compelling personal brand on LinkedIn can be detrimental to your job search, as it can give the impression of a lack of initiative or professionalism. Take the time to optimise your LinkedIn profile , highlight your achievements and expertise, and actively engage with relevant industry content and relationships.

5. Typo mistakes:

It's crucial to thoroughly review your application before submitting it, as even the slightest typos or misspellings can result in an automatic rejection. For instance, a simple spelling mistake in a social media post can potentially lead to losing a valuable client. Similarly, in fields like legal or scientific research, minor errors in documentations can have significant repercussions. To ensure accuracy, make it a habit to double-check your work and consider seeking assistance from a trusted friend or family member who can help identify any overlooked mistakes. By taking these extra steps, you can minimize the chances of costly errors slipping through.

6. Bad timing:

Timing is crucial when it comes to job hunting, and being proactive can give you a competitive advantage. LinkedIn can be a valuable resource in this regard, as it allows you to track when job postings were made. By staying updated on the latest job alerts and notifications, and regularly checking for new openings, you increase your chances of being among the first applicants. This can significantly impact your job search process and increase your likelihood of securing desired positions. Employers/Recruiters' cultural and professional orientation matters. The degree of success for job hunting strategies varies from country to country. What works for Indian society may fail in Nigeria. And what works for Americans will almost fail flat in Nigeria/Africa, without modifications.
