Why young Singaporeans take overseas career leaps

It is hard to countenance an early-career move abroad for many here, despite the personal and career growth up for grabs.

My colleague Kai Xiang Teo speaks to young Singaporeans who still chose to kick off their careers overseas. I hope their accounts will prompt you to examine where – literally – your aspirations lie, like they did for me.

Meanwhile, in life, worries about money can spiral out of proportion when comparisons are made to those around us, a phenomenon my fellow HeadSTart team member Prisca Ang writes about in the latest instalment of the Young and Savvy column.

Why does the ST summary say it is “hard to countenance an early-career move abroad for many here”? The article itself said: “Nearly two in three Singaporean workers are willing to relocate abroad for work, with 72 per cent of those willing to relocate being young professionals under the age of 30.” It is certainly worthwhile spending time working abroad if for nothing more than to gain life experience and broaden your horizons. Singapore is a tiny country. Remember the Chinese fable of the Frog in the Well.
