Why are you still working, Mama?

As I sat at my desk, deeply engrossed in a project deadline, I heard a soft voice behind me. It was my little Thomas, with his eyes wide and full of innocence, asking, "Why are you still working, Mama? Can we play for a little while? I want some cuddles and playtime with you."

Those words instantly melted my heart and reminded me of the delicate balance we all strive to maintain between our professional and personal lives.

The Reality of Remote Work

In today's world, where remote work has become the norm for many of us, the lines between professional and personal time have become increasingly blurred. While the flexibility of working from home offers many advantages, it also presents unique challenges, especially for parents.

Thomas's request was a poignant reminder that while our work is important, so too is the time we spend with our loved ones. Children grow up so fast, and these precious moments of play, laughter, and cuddles are fleeting.

Finding Balance

Balancing work and family life is not always easy, but it's essential for our well-being and the well-being of our families. Here are a few strategies that I've found helpful:

  1. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work time and family time. When you're working, focus on your tasks, but when it's family time, be fully present with your loved ones.
  2. Create a Schedule: Develop a daily or weekly schedule that includes dedicated time for both work and family activities. Share this schedule with your family so they know when you'll be available.
  3. Communicate Openly: Keep an open line of communication with your employer/ clients and colleagues about your availability. Many employers are understanding and supportive of the need for work-life balance.
  4. Take Breaks: Regular short breaks during the workday can help you recharge and spend quality moments with your family. Even a 10-minute play session can make a big difference.
  5. Prioritise Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is crucial. Ensure you have time for self-care activities that rejuvenate you, making you more present and engaged both at work and at home.

Embracing the Moments

After Thomas's heartfelt request, I decided to take a break from my work. We spent the next hour playing his favourite game, building castles with his blocks, and sharing giggles. Those moments were priceless and reminded me of why I strive to balance my professional ambitions with my role as a parent.

As professionals, we often get caught up in the pursuit of career success, but it's essential to remember that true success encompasses both our professional achievements and the quality of our personal relationships. Our children, like Thomas, need our time, attention, and love just as much as our work does.
