Why You Shouldn’t Meditate

Why You Shouldn’t Meditate

Should you meditate?

Is meditation just a fad?

Is meditation a waste of time?

Isn’t meditation only for weird people??

Should I meditate if I already have a meditative activity like going for a walk?

Should I meditate if I’m really bad at it?

Should I meditate if I can’t clear my mind?

Should I meditate even if I can’t sit still for 5 minutes??

The answer to all these questions depends on what you want in your life.

Answer these questions for me:

  • Do you want a distracted and overstimulated brain?
  • Do you want a fragmented lack of ability to focus?
  • Do you want to stay stuck in the rigidity of your emotions?
  • Do you want to think endless pointless thoughts and overthink?
  • Do you want more anxiety & depression?
  • Do you want problems sleeping at night??

If your answer is Yes, then you are correct, you shouldn’t meditate.

However, if you:

  • care about your brain.
  • want to focus much better.
  • care about emotion flexibility.
  • want less overthinking & anxiety.
  • want to be in the present moment.
  • want less stress & chaos.?
  • want more peace & gratitude.

Then yes, you should meditate.?

The simple answer is, if we could take everything that meditation does to your brain and package it into a pill or supplement, it would be hands down the most valuable drug in the world.?

Every single person on planet earth would want this drug. Especially since it has almost 0 side effects.

And yet, we all have access to this drug.

And guess how??

By sitting down and doing nothing :O

And yet 90% of people reading this article will dismiss this and not meditate because it seems to good to be true, or meditation seems so simple that it can’t possibly do all these things in the list above.?

Either way, it’s your life, your time, and your brain.

Since I started meditating in 2016 and up until today it continues to change my life.

Sometimes I take breaks from meditating, and almost always I regret it because I can feel my brain capacity go down, while my sense of stress, lack of focus, and chaos goes up.?

How to Start Meditating

We live in a world with a million different meditation techniques.

One of the most straightforward and well-researched forms is mindfulness meditation.?

5 Steps to Start Meditating:

  1. Set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes.?
  2. Begin by taking deep breaths, and focusing your attention on how your body feels. Feel the spatial awareness of your body touching the seat from head to toe.
  3. Next, close your eyes, and begin breathing normally in and out.?
  4. Put 100% of your attention on the sensation of your breath flowing in and out of your body.??Feel your chest inflate, your diagraphm go up and down, the air flow in and out.
  5. 100% of your focus should be on your breath. Invariably, what will happen is you will lose your focus. You will start thinking about other random things. That is a fact.?

The goal is to realize you’ve been distracted and slowly put your attention back on your breath. During the course of your meditation, this may happen many many times. No need to judge yourself for how well you are meditating or not. Meditation is not a sports competition.?

This is the most basic form of meditation. You can learn about other methods on YouTube, courses, teachers, etc.?

Take action!

I challenge you to start meditating.?

It won’t be easy, but it’s worth it.?

Conclusion

Start small and work your way up. If you’ve never meditated before, don’t start doing it 3 times a day. Try doing it once a day for 5 minutes.?

Bottom Line:?If you do this everyday consistently for 2 weeks you will feel like a different person. You will feel like your brain has upgraded, your mental health challenges won’t be as bad and you’ll be able to do what you actually want to do in life.?

Similar to what you shared Mark, whenever I 'backslide' in my meditation habits, I notice that my brain capacity goes down. I get super foggy. And from there, all of my helpful habits start to backslide... And for people who say 'meditation doesn't work for me'... I challenge that by asking this question. If you've weight lifted a day in your life, would you expect to be an expert at olympic weight lifting on day 1? Meditation is a practice and to be seen as 'strength training' for the mind. It takes consistent practice and if you're serious about learning, pick up a book or better yet, find a meditation teacher that can guide you.

I started out with Zen many years ago. But I only properly managed it when I discovered that sitting still is not for me. I do dynamic meditations, breathe in many ways (and especially the huge oxygen intake and holding my breath does it for me). I feel the release and became a transformed person. Nowadays my whole life is meditation, I don't need to go sit for it anymore. I live mostly in the now and I'm free from overthinking. The insights into what's happening in our world and my own life are big now. So, yes, starting with meditation has been transformational for me. Thanks!!!
