Why You Should Write Daily

Dear fellow writer,

How are you doing in the midst of all the disruptions happening in the world? Before I get to my point today, I thought I should genuinely check on you, see how you are keeping safe physically, mentally and emotionally in these draining times. Is that okay with you?

I just want to connect with you and write you sometimes because words are the best gifts I could ever give anyone. So, take time to fill this ‘WRITER’S WELLBEING FORM’. It’s okay if you don’t want to share your life details with a stranger, I really don’t want the details, you know?

Do you remember the first letter I wrote you? If you didn't read it, you should for context. I'll keep writing you and I'll keep hoping you can write me too.

I just want to listen, give you a call once in a while to check up on you, write you an email to remind you that you’re not alone on this journey, send you some of my newsletters if you want and sometimes, call you for a gig.

This isn’t a tip read. I get tired of writing about tips and processes, you know? I sometimes want to share the burden I carry in my heart with people who would understand. Writing is more than a mere means of expression, sometimes writing heals me and other times it hurts me.

At some point, writing erases my fears while at other moments, writing is the very thing I dread. Writing is more than a career, it’s more than making a living and at some times, writing is a stranger.

The way it responds to my call, commitment and passion with a cold shoulder makes me wonder what happened to the hot romance going on between us both. So just like every other relationship I know, it’s an imperfect one but my heart yearns for it. I feel liberated when I write, I feel like Lil Wayne did when he sang Drop the World and I feel like the universe is finally paying attention.

Do you get all I just described? Do these happen to you too? Do you experience all these wild ranges of emotions and fatigue? Maybe you should write about it too. Maybe you should tell me about it too. Maybe we could start a series about it; something along the lines of ‘THE IMPERFECT RELATIONSHIP WRITERS HAVE WITH THEIR ART’.

But the truth is I might not be able to express myself this simply yet gorgeously if I haven’t been practicing writing daily. There’s something that happens to me on weeks where I write consistently. I am more aware of my desires to be a writer and my eyes are focused on the goals I want to achieve. My feelings, emotions and experiences join the party after a while and I reach into a place I never knew I could deep inside of my core. It awakens the future in me – stretches forward to the writer I am becoming and I see a flicker of light that guides my path to keep writing.

I beseech you (urgggh! KJV really did a number on me) to try writing daily for 21 days.

Sit, stand up, lay down, squat; take whatever position you want and open your laptop, turn on your smartphone, get a pen and a jotter and write. They might not all turn out to be masterpieces but you would have become better for it. You would have learnt consistency, understood your flow, pay attention to your process, communicate your ideas and thoughts more effectively and you would have taken a step closer to the writer you want to be.

I have a few articles on writing processes and tips here on LinkedIn, you can also check out Medium for some tof my short series and definitely connect with me on Instagram, you get to catch my chilled vibe there.
