Why you should work in DevOps
Why you should work in DevOps
DevOps is an exciting and fast-paced industry. And in this article, I'll explain why you should consider applying for a job in DevOps.
There is a skills shortage
The [skills shortage](https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomaswictor/2018/01/12/the-skills-shortage/) is a global problem and you should consider the DevOps industry if you want to make more money, have more job security, and work on cutting edge projects that solve real problems in the world.
The demand for DevOps professionals has been steadily rising since 2016. In fact, according to Dice's "Worldwide Developer Survey Results" report from 2018 there were over 1000 companies looking for DevOps people in that year alone, since then the number has continued to rise - even through the pandemic and out. Recently in response to the Open Source Jobs Study, 42% of hiring managers said they wanted to add in DevOps skills to the team.
It isn't just an American problem either; many other countries are experiencing similar shortages of skilled workers (such as Germany) which means that this might be your chance at getting paid what your skills deserve!
You'll probably get paid more
You'll probably get paid more.
DevOps is a hot field and many business' are struggling to hire in such a competitive market. As a result, the demand for DevOps engineers is high, which means they can command higher salaries than other software engineers or IT professionals. A recent survey found that Senior DevOps Engineers in Ireland earn on average €95,000 per year in total compensation (which includes salary and bonuses).
There are jobs for both junior and senior DevOps engineers
You might be wondering: what is a DevOps engineer? A DevOps engineer is someone who combines coding skills with an understanding of how to apply technology in a business environment.

A junior DevOps position will require you to get your hands dirty—you'll need to understand how code works, how it interacts with hardware and software systems, and how it's deployed into production. You'll also need to know the basics of configuring those systems to run smoothly (and automatically scaling them up if they're too slow). A senior position will involve more management—you'll oversee junior engineers and help them improve their own processes.
Junior positions are rarely ever truly "Entry Level"; there is often an expectation to have operated in an IT environment before - either coming across from an infrastructural background or via Development. Senior roles are generally reserved for those with 5 years + experience under their belt. That said, not all companies make this distinction between seniority levels—many companies treat their entire engineering staff as one big group (which can include both entry-level employees and managers). In any case though, there are still plenty of opportunities out there for people at all levels of experience!
You'll be challenged every day
Working in DevOps is a constant challenge. You'll be working with a team of people to solve problems, and each person brings something different to the table. If you're lucky enough to work at an innovative company, you may even be able to learn new skills every day!
DevOps is an exciting career path to pursue!
If you're thinking about pursuing a career in DevOps, it's not too late to get started.
The field is still growing and expanding, with more and more companies recognizing the benefits of DevOps. You can find jobs at small startups or big Fortune 500 companies. The industry is also full of opportunity for those who want to learn new skills—there are plenty of resources out there that can help you get started on your journey into the world of DevOps.
Conclusion
Those are just some of the reasons why you should consider pursuing a career in DevOps, but we hope that this post has given you a better idea of what it’s like to work in DevOps. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out!
