"The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves." - Unknown
When I was starting out in business about 30 years ago as young entrepreneur in my early 20’s, I wondered what it would be like to have a $1Million business.??It seemed to be an impossible goal due to my limiting beliefs about my own abilities, the potential of my business model and other factors.??Out of frustration, lack of confidence and uncertainty, I settled on the idea of just making enough money to pay my bills, and to get by.??I discovered that when I set my thermostat on just ‘mediocre’ and on just paying my bills, I performed at that level too.???No surprise, right???My results were mediocre, just as I had planned.??Mission accomplished.
At around that time, I decided to start reading personal development books and listening to cassette tapes on the topic.??One concept that really resonated with me was about thinking ‘bigger’ and setting higher standards for myself, and how in doing so, you begin to perform at a higher level.??“Fake it until you make it”?became my personal mantra, as I worked each day?‘as if’?I was running a $1Million company, and not just making ends meet.??Essentially, I began to raise my?Success Thermostat.
Flash forward a few years and I was running that $1Million company I had dreamed of doing.??This result was achieved due in part to my transformation from operating with the mindset of just ‘getting by’, to operating ‘as if’ I was running a successful company.???In other words, by raising my Success Thermostat, the actions I took were congruent with the higher standards I set for myself. The outcome was inevitable.?
