Why you should recruit Fisherpeople!
I dropped my son and his friends off recently, for an overnight fishing trip. I was thinking to myself how great this is for them and how much they are learning, life lessons....I thought about all the different skills they develop and then it dawned on my - do they know? Well was I in for a shock. I asked them and their responses blew me away. Yes 3, 15 year old boys did talk and yes, they knew more than me! and Yes they really got it - how these skills may translate into a work place environment!
What they learned: (their words)
1. How to get out of trouble, how to untangle your line, be really patient or else you will have to cut it.
2. Being self sufficient, getting organised, making sure you have everything you need.
3. Be self aware - what and who are around you.
4. Notice if others around you need help.
5. Decided which lake to go to, research and ask around who had been successful.
6. How to clean your gear.
7. Techniques from other fisherman about bait used, swims to use, timing etc.
8. Think about the weather in advance .
9. That failing is OK! Yes they said that!!, often they catch nothing all night but then analyse the area, position, bait used amongst many others.
10. Keep out of the way of the other fisherman (they can get very grumpy if you cross their line)
11. Prepare - I can vouch for this - at least one whole day packing, repacking, making bait, warm clothes, bed, tent, food, checking nets, rods a million other things.
12. Keep to the rules and listen to the bailiff - He means business!
13. Being confidence - you are are on their own
So next time you see "Fishing" on the CV as a hobby stop yawning and start asking what, where, how, PBs etc. You will uncover a whole host of skills not necessarily used in their current role. Also that "spark" when talking about something you are passionate about - if you could bring just a little of that to your business!!
Oh yes, that is my son and that is his Personal Best :)
What an eye opener, very impressive.
