Why You Should Quit Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners for Better Health

More people are beginning to recognize that sugar is addictive. Even if you don't have any weight to lose, you might want to consider cutting out sugar because it causes so many problems in your body. It leads to inflammation, moodiness, and other diseases, including cancer and diabetes.

I encourage people to consider going sugar-free, except what is found naturally in fruit and vegetables. The problem with going sugar-free, besides sugar being in so many of the foods we eat today, is that many products labeled as "sugar-free" contain artificial sweeteners, which might be even worse. These are chemicals that are typically neurotoxins, meaning they're poisonous to our brains and bodies.

When I first went sugar-free, I switched to artificial sweeteners. I didn’t think I was addicted to them, but they were wreaking havoc on my stomach and digestive system without me realizing it. One day, I was encouraged by a nutrition expert to cut out artificial sweeteners, and although it was hard, I decided to do it—and I can't believe how much better I felt.

I still had some stomach issues, but things are much better now. I realized that the chemicals added to processed foods were also causing problems. Even things labeled as "natural flavorings" are often chemicals that are harmful to your body.

It's disappointing how unhealthy so much of our food is. I’m now focused on shopping the outside track of the grocery store, where the fruits, vegetables, and plain meats are. Unfortunately, most processed foods just aren’t good for you.

I’ve also started making things from scratch, like banana oatmeal muffins that Tony and I really enjoy. It’s easy to grab one when you’ve made them ahead of time, and I’m grateful for healthy options. I'm still struggling with finding healthy choices when eating out, though. Tony and I love going out to eat, but the healthy options are limited, so we’ve cut back and do our best.

I already feel so much better—I don’t have the stomach pain and embarrassing gas I used to. I want to encourage everyone to stay away from processed foods. I get emails about petitions to remove chemicals from food, and while that would be great, the most effective way to fight back is simply not to buy these products. If they’re not making money, companies will stop producing them with harmful chemicals.

I try to buy organic fruits and vegetables when I can, but it’s not always easy because organic options are limited and more expensive. Sometimes I have to buy non-organic produce, but I often pay for it with stomach issues. We really need to watch what we eat for the sake of our health and mental well-being.

I hope this information helps you. It took me a long time to realize all of this, and I want to save people from the same pain I’ve experienced. Don’t worry about losing weight—if you change your eating habits, the weight will come off naturally. The most important thing is to change your diet because so much of the food in grocery stores today is making us sick.
