Why You Should Play at Work!

Hey there, creative minds!

Remember when you were a kid and play was your full-time job?

Well, guess what?

That playful spirit might be the key to unlocking your best ideas at work.

Today, we're going to chat about how bringing more fun into your day can lead to amazing breakthroughs. Ready to play?

When was the last time you played? Not the kind of play that’s planned or has a purpose, but the kind that lets you forget time. Play for fun, not for keeps.?

But here’s a secret: play isn’t only for kids.?

It’s a powerful way to spark creativity, come up with new ideas, and even have big breakthroughs at work.

1) The Power of Play?

Play is often seen as something small. You know, kid stuff. But research shows that play is important for everyone, even busy professionals. It’s more than taking a break—it helps your brain relax so you can come back with fresh ideas. Think of play as a magic ingredient that can change how you solve problems.

Why It’s Important:?

Play helps you be creative by letting you try new things. When you play, you’re more likely to find answers you wouldn’t get by thinking in a strict, serious way. This is critical in high-stress situations or when the usual ways don’t work.

How It’s Useful:?

Adding play to your day can be as simple as taking a quick break to doodle. Start a new hobby. Learn a language. Have a fun quiz session with your team. Small moments of play can lead to big jumps in creativity and problem-solving. It helps you do better at work.

2) How Play Leads to Breakthroughs

The link between play and creativity is clear. Many successful people say playful thinking led to their big ideas. When you’re having fun, your brain relaxes. That helps you connect ideas in new ways you might not have thought of before.

Why It’s Important:?

When you’re stuck on a problem, it’s easy to push harder. But that can make things worse. Play lets your mind wander, and that’s when you get those “aha” moments. These are the moments when you find new solutions that you might not see when you’re being too serious.

How It’s Useful:?

Next time you feel stuck, try doing something playful. Whether it’s a quick game, a puzzle, or even a silly chat with a colleague. Changing the energy could be the key to finding the breakthrough you need.

This week, I dare you to add one playful moment to each workday. Here's how:

  1. Pick a play activity (like those listed above)
  2. Do it for 5-10 minutes each day
  3. Notice how it affects your mood and ideas

Keep track of any new thoughts or solutions that pop up during or after your play time. You can expect a few surprises at what you come up with.

This is true, I always add play to my daily schedule. Play keeps me creative. I share a joke with colleagues, have a good laugh about something silly I did or organise Easter egg hunts with my colleagues. Recently I added skipping during my breaks ??
