Why You Should Learn A Skill (and create your own job)
What’s up folks happy Saturday.
The world as we know it is changing.
There’s no such thing as job security anymore unless you make it yourself.
A couple of years ago there was still resistance to this idea and folks would honor on bended knee those revered and sought-after careers such as teacher, nurse, firefighter, or doctor.
Well not anymore. These are still great careers but they are not secure careers.
Not only do these positions dictate what you can and can’t do, say or stand for in your personal life but they are also controlled by people who do not care for your best interests (or really any of your interests) let alone how things will play out for you or your family.
So the old security bubble has popped.
I’m not saying this is a good thing but it is the reality.
So what to do?
Well, I’m no guidance counselor but I see one main option.
And that is to increase your value and create your own security by learning a skill.
The skill could be anything.
It could be a trade in the traditional sense or a “practice” of pretty much anything.
It could be a shorter-term “hard skill” (ie cutting down trees) or a longer-term “soft skill” (networking, creativity, organization, delegation, discipline) but the best option is to combine both and use them together.
It is this combination that builds real security
In the so-called new economy pretty much anything can become a skill but it does take time (and some take longer than others).
The skill I am learning is called copywriting. It is basically persuading and selling with words. And it has all kinds of applications.
But the most important thing is that it is in high demand.
You see, selling what people are already buying is always the fastest way to pay the piper (that’s you).
So yea, you want to learn a skill that has value, and then you basically create your own job.
But it doesn’t end there. Once you have a foundational skill you can learn and add another one! (This usually starts to happen on its own) Then you can start layering and stacking these different skills to double or triple your value.

Example:
Stage one: Tree Cutting
Stage two: Tree Cutting + Discipline
Stage three: Tree Cutting + Discipline + People Skills
Stage four: Running and Owning your own Tree Cutting Business.
Are there other stresses that come with this? Yes.
Does it feel less secure at first? Yes.
Is it easy? Hell no.
Is it for everybody: No
But if you do feel it’s for you and you are up for the challenge then it’s pretty much all upside.
The standards set for most “normal” jobs are very low. I would argue much of our workforce shows up and checks out.
So all you have to do as a service provider (that is what you become when you sell a skill) is to become “checked in”.
You just gotta be better than the lower end of the industry standard, and that end is pretty darn low.
Mix in a bit of personal pride and you will be better than 90 percent of the competition in a matter of months.
And this does not have to be some complex online business thing, it holds for local businesses as well. Most places simply don’t put in any effort to call you back, treat you well, or make sure you get what you need, just try calling for a plumber!
So there you have it.
Learn a skill that’s already selling and in time you will have more security than you know what to do with.

Its time to secure “the bag”
