Why You Should Join A Men's Group

Why You Should Join A Men's Group

Men's groups have quite literally changed my life.

For the past 12 years I've been attending various groups where I can sit in circle with other men and hear them share about life, in all its struggles and celebrations.

The stress of holding all of the weighty experiences in my life inside me for decades on end, without ever sharing them or realizing that other men held similar stories inside them, nearly killed me.

Every group has helped me.

  • The 5-6 men who gathered in a tiny office in the first group I was ever in.
  • The second group, a gathering in which several of us rotated hosting duties at our respective houses.
  • The 8 of us who did Rockstar Camp for Men, which culminated in each of us serving as lead singer for a live band at a packed nightclub.
  • The handful of groups I led virtually during the early stages of the pandemic.
  • The "Men of Teal" group, that has met for 90 minutes a month virtually for the past ~3 years.

I suspect the coffee date I'm having this morning with a guy in my town who I'll be meeting for the first time will have a similar effect.

Life is challenging. (And beautiful and rewarding.) Men in our culture have largely taken it on by themselves in recent times. There's no need to do go it alone.

Join a men's group. I can just about guarantee it will change your life for the better.

Jim Young "Don't argue with me. I know I'm right." Intentional / humorous irony? Or just plain irony? My concern here is that your powerful message will be lost in this diction, which I (N of 1) find off-putting, and stereotypically toxic-masculine.

I agree that men's groups can be a powerful thing when led well. I'm curious to hear what do you mean by "being in conversation with a bunch of guys about emptying ourselves out"?

Totally agree, Jim Young. My first men's group is the one you and I co-founded: Men of Teal. And it has made a huge difference to me. Not only have our conversations and connections helped me through problems, but they've enriched me and shown me new possibilities. I also have been noticing more and more positive men's groups in recent years. Dad's groups. Book clubs. Groups for men in retirement years. I'm working on a book on a more hopeful story unfolding about men then just the grim headlines of Proud Boys, toxic masculinity and male deaths of despair. The emergence of healthy men's groups will be central to the story. If you know of examples of these groups--maybe you're in one yourself--please let me know! Jim, thanks again for post, podcast and partnership, brother.
