Most of the times, accepting a counter-offer can be a huge blunder. Some of the reasons behind this are-
1. You will lose trust:
As soon as you put down your papers to your current employer and accept a new offer, it shows that you were not happy and already looking for a change. In this case, if you’re given a counter-offer and you accept it, it’ll not guarantee that you will not look for change again. Also, the new organization will lose trust in you and maybe won’t consider you in the future due to lack of trust!
2. You will lose your reputation and respect
Accepting the counter-offer after putting down the papers may term you as an indecisive and fluctuating personality. Accepting a counter-offer may change your relationship with colleagues as well as your superiors and those working under you. In addition to that, those who are under you will always wonder about the deal that made you change the decision of leaving the company. Certainly, this will ultimately lose the reputation that you’ve built with your hard work and dedication!
3. Your bank balance will remain the same in the long run
A better and more package will make you happy and ecstatic for the short-term as these financial gains are quite unlikely to last for longer periods. The reason is, this extra money or the monetary hike given to you to keep you on board has been come from somewhere and maybe allocated for your next bonus or raise. This negates the true value of the counter-offer.
4. You are burning bridges
Threatening your current organization to resign and leave is indeed a bad idea, especially after you’ve accepted the offer from another company. The decision of getting retained and continuing working with the old organization can hamper your impression in both companies. If you decide to stay and continue serving your current company and in the future things don’t work for you as expected it can be said that you’ve burned a bridge with the company that could have been a better fit for you and your talent. Just remember, even the oral acceptance can be considered as an agreement by your new organization. So better take your decision wisely.
Final Words
Summing up everything, it can be said that counter-offer is no less than career “Kiss-Of-Death”!
It can affect your career severely while leaving a drastic impression!
What are your views on this? Does the employee accept counter-offer and be retained in the current organization after resignation or not. Do let us know in the comments.

2 年I strongly agree to the points u shared. As we all know that everything involves cost, so in this case it should be retained with a lump sum amount in addition to increase in salary. Indian unorganised corporates will do what you shared but the organised corporates will do value the employees.
