Why You Should Embrace Failure

Why You Should Embrace Failure

One of the biggest fears I come across when it comes to changing careers is the "fear of failure".

In the current climate of social media (where people only post their success stories).

And in a world where we are often expected to stick to the social norms...

"Don't take risks, make sure you play it safe"

"You need to go to uni to earn that kind of money"

"Stick to what you know"

It's hard to expect anyone to embrace failing.

But let me ask you this...

If you're playing it safe and keeping yourself well inside your comfort zone...

Then aren't you failing yourself a result?

You're just doing it in silence and in secret.

In my opinion, embracing failure is often the path TOWARD success.

Many of my clients have had one massive failure just before they attain what they want.

Embracing failure is often the path TOWARD success.

The world is full of successful failures.

Many of them had to overcome naysayers, setbacks and career disappointments to reach the top.

Some of the most obvious ‘successful failures’ that come to mind include:

1. Walt Disney - he was fired by his editor because he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas". Needless to say, he went on to be nominated for 59 Academy Awards and is the greatest animator of our time.

2. Niklas Hed - was a game developer that created 51 games, all of which were failures. This, however, enabled him to build Angry Birds, an app that dominated the app store and became a worldwide phenomenon.

3. Michael Jordan - failed countless times in his career. He admits that he missed thousands of shots and lost hundreds of games but it was this failure that drove him on to succeed.

4. Stephen King - One of his most successful books "Carrie" was rejected by 30 publishers. As a result, he chucked the manuscript in the bin. Luckily his wife retrieved it and as you know the rest is history.

5. Colonel Sanders - At the age of 62, Sanders pitched his chicken recipe to thousands of restaurants, but they all rejected him. So instead, he hit the road and started selling his franchise-model chicken restaurant, which we all know today as KFC.

6. Me (Tom Harris) - In 2018 I had been made redundant from my retail job, signing on at my local Job Centre for benefits because I'd been rejected by over a hundred employers. Roll on to today, I run a successful career coaching business and work for a charity helping disadvantaged people get back into work.

As you can see, those who attain their goals often do it on the back of massive failure.

You could argue it's the main prerequisite of success.

So, isn't it time you started embracing failure yourself?

Because you never know...

It might be your most SUCCESSFUL failure yet. ??
