Every one of us could benefit from learning a little bit more about how to present ourselves to the world for success. When I get invited to talk to businesses about Dress Code or How to Dress for Success my top tip is that we all could increase our career and business success by considering the visual impressions we make at work and in everyday life.
“Whoever said, ‘It’s what’s on the inside that counts,’ couldn’t have been more optimistic about humankind. But let’s face it, what’s on the outside can be just as important.
It’s been proven that if you look the part you can often improve your job prospects and income, dressing well is important to a person’s self-respect and composure as well.
Dressing for your role, whatever that role may be, is vital to communicating the impression of who you are and who you want to become, and ideally it should be first thing on your mind when you get dressed each morning.
Dressing for Work
As to the specific requirements of dressing at work, “Spend the time necessary to put together an outfit that implies your happiness, confidence and best qualities. Everyone has redeeming traits. Why not announce yours through your dress and personal grooming?
Also, no one likes seeing dirty shoes or grass stained ripped jeans in the office. That carelessness makes everyone feel a little insecure about you and your competence or attitude for your work. Make sure you’re representing your title, your company and your colleagues well.
When people say, ‘Wear your heart on your sleeve,’ you can take that advice in a very literal sense when it comes to grooming.
It’s interesting that many companies whose employees never leave the office are forced to adhere to out of date dress codes. Why make someone sit at a desk in customer service in polyester black suit and a tie? I would advise Managers to empower employees to create their own dress code (as long as its suitable for the environment then who cares)
At work, dressing well can clinch it for your career, showcase your qualities and secure your confidence. Go through your wardrobe to find the pieces you should do away with, maybe book a Personal Stylist or arrange a Wardrobe Detox.
Dress to represent who you are now and what fits you best now, you should focus on items that represent your personality.
Now perhaps you’re reading my blog and thinking, “I hope no one focuses on what I’m wearing today" If this is you, then you are the exact person who should be taking this prescription to heart and getting some help.
“Respect, confidence and self-empowerment can all start with your diligence to clothing,” Make sure to look your best every day. Prepare yourself as if you were planning to interview for your next big promotion. Dress in the way that is comfortable to you and in a stylistic manner that makes you feel fresh, professional, and well put together.
In business, it really is true that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
