Why you really, truly, must establish the daily habit of gratitude

A daily meditation is only one of many ways to foster the habit of gratitude

If you...

... were to be mentored by me...Or you invited me to act "as-if chairman" of your business...Or you attended any of our Best Me workshops... you’d soon discover I constantly rabbit on about making gratitude your daily habit.

Why?? First, for me, at a lively age of 83, and still going strong, my hour-by-hour practice of gratitude – despite all that life throws up – is the single biggest reason I continue to live with zing and zest.

Science is overwhelming

Then, second... the scientific and anecdotal evidence are both so overwhelming, I recommend that you view gratitude as the essential oxygen for your soul, or psyche – which in Greek are the same.

“Gratitude is life-enhancing, big time. Its lack, life-threatening.” – a #Nevilleism.

And I beg you, over time, you make gratitude second nature.? So, you stop for just one minute many times every day, to observe your breathing... and mentally, verbally, or in writing. express something for which you are grateful,?

Why again?? Because the benefits are so many – including changing your brain’s hard-wiring and your mindset.? Of all the thousands of DIY tools you can use to make your business, life, health, learning and relationships far better...this is Numero Uno.

Gratitude rewires your brain so you can transform your life in just minutes a day

Gratitude isn’t just about saying “thank you” or feeling good in the moment. It’s a scientifically proven method to rewire your brain, build resilience, and cultivate a life filled with positivity, zing, zest and abundance.

If you’re looking for a simple, powerful habit to improve your mental and emotional well-being, look no further. Gratitude is the key.

The science behind gratitude

Neuroscience has revealed that practising gratitude boosts the production of dopamine and serotonin.? These two neurotransmitters enhance happiness and reduce stress. Gratitude, when practiced day in, day out, rewires your brain to overwrite your brain's in-built negativity bias, and, instead, you focus on the positive aspects of life.? It creates a powerful feedback loop that fosters a mindset of abundance.

Over time, this practice doesn’t just improve your mood. Gratitude increases the volume of grey matter in areas of the brain associated with emotional processing and decision-making. It acts as a natural antidepressant, enhances relationships, improves physical health, and makes you more resilient to life’s challenges.

A walk in Nature is a great spark for expressing our gratitude

?A story that redefines gratitude

Just before Covid -19 hit, Ryan, a software engineer felt his life was running on autopilot.

He was stuck in the grind, overwhelmed by deadlines, and disconnected from his family. Ryan’s mentor suggested an unusual remedy: a gratitude walk. For 20 minutes each morning, Ryan would walk through his neighbourhood and observe three things he was grateful for.

At first, he resisted. What difference could this small act possibly make? But one morning, while walking, along the river near his country town, he noticed a Rainbow Lorikeet perched on a tree.

The bird’s bright feathers reminded him of a childhood memory.? That was building birdhouses with his grandfather.

Small moment, big spark

That single moment sparked a flood of gratitude for his upbringing and the lessons he had learned.

Ryan began noticing, and appreciating, more. The warmth of his coffee cup, the laughter of his kids, the satisfaction of solving a tough problem at work.

Within weeks, his stress levels dropped, his focus improved, and he reconnected with his family.

"Gratitude doesn't change our circumstances.? No!? Instead it transforms the way we experience them." - a #Nevillieism.

Make Gratitude Your Daily Habit

Gratitude isn’t just an emotional exercise.? It’s a rewiring of your brain. Take just one minute now to pause, breathe, and reflect on one thing you’re grateful for. You can start small: the smell of rain, a smile from a stranger, or the way sunlight filters through your window.... the wonder of your hands and fingers... the aroma of dinner cooking... glorious music.

Consistent practice will shift your mindset over time.? As it does it makes positivity your default setting. You’ll not only feel happier but also approach challenges with a fresh perspective and a stronger sense of resilience. One way to prove it. Try it!
