Why You Need a Workplace Safety Program

Why You Need a Workplace Safety Program

Some careers are relatively safe, and the likelihood of getting hurt at work is low. Other jobs, however, come with life-threatening risks daily. No matter what the job is, it’s possible for employees to get hurt. Even office jobs come with their fair share of dangers, and the sad reality is an employee could get hurt at any job.

If an employee doesn’t know how to properly use machinery or is unaware of their surroundings, it could result in a serious injury. Outside of not wanting your employees to get hurt because you care about them and their wellbeing, it’s also likely you don’t want to have to deal with the messy and complex aftermath of a work-related injury.

While employers sometimes have to pay big sums of money to employees who got hurt on the job, the employee also has a lot to lose from workplace accidents. Injured employees often need to take time off work to heal from their injuries, and as such are out of pay for however long it takes to recover. This leads to less productivity, fewer workers, and the complex paperwork and compensation that comes along with a workplace injury.

When it comes to reducing the number of workplace accidents, it’s best to have a plan in mind. Putting together a workplace safety program is probably the best way to deal with the situation.

What is a Workplace Safety Program?

A workplace safety program is?defined by The United States Department of Labor ?as a plan used to prevent the injury, death, and illness of employees in the workplace. Rather than simply respond to workplace injuries after they happen, employers are encouraged to create a simple plan with clearly outlined goals, that seeks to prevent workplace injuries before they can happen.

A good safety program will outline the goals, guidelines, and objectives that go into maintaining a safe working environment. This isn’t all there is to it, though, and depending on the workplace you might also need to provide things like personal protective equipment (PPE), safety training, a system that alerts you of emergencies, and checklists of safety procedures.
