Great Leadership Matters...

Great Leadership Matters...

We all know it. Yes people don’t leave organisations, they leave their managers.

We have seen it time and time again. Mind you, I have seen people leave because their leader has been exceptional that they have been able to discover that greatness in themselves and found the next great opportunity. Another blog topic.

Great leadership matters.

Great leadership is an organisational performance and profit multiplier. Great leadership is an employee engagement and satisfaction multiplier. Great leadership is an individual performance and retention multiplier.

I think you get where I am going with this.

I fell into leadership consulting and development space by accident. With a background in human resources, I never saw myself being the CEO of a leading leadership consulting company. Never. Thank goodness I am now.

So here I was an expected full time solo mum ten years ago who had moved back to Australia from China with $2000 in the bank, and a crappy old Holden commodore (Holden’s are great cars by the way; this one wasn’t).

I had no idea what I was going to do. It was a very tough time. I met someone who owned a leadership and change consulting company. He needed a consultant to work on engineering and construction project sites to teach and coach engineers, foremen and superintendents. He needed me to teach them leadership skills.

I got the job (after faking it a little; I said I knew SO much about leadership) and I fell in love with it. I was teaching and coaching these leaders; leadership. They were great at building bridges and roads but not so great at leading people to build bridges and roads.

I was making a difference. I could see it, feel it and hear it. They were becoming great leaders. It made a difference to them, their teams and the project. It was a great ripple effect. And it made a huge difference to how the projects performed.

"Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flow charts. It is about one life influencing another."  John C. Maxwell

I could share 100’s of stories like this one. All they needed was someone to show them the way. To be that trusted advisor and coach to help them with their leadership mindset, skills and capabilities. Someone they could trust to help them and their teams be the leaders they wanted to be. To give them the confidence and courage to be leaders.

If I think back over the past decade of doing this work, building high performance teams and leaders, partnering with organisations to help them achieve greatness and supporting leaders to be their best. The one thing that made the biggest difference to our work and our purpose was our leadership and the supporters we had around us. It was our coaches, advisors and mentors that helped us be the best we could be, ultimately they created a ripple effect on our work and others around us.

No one gives you a book on leadership or building a company; and automatically you are a great leader. It takes a lot more than that.

It takes trips and falls, learning’s and lessons. It takes great insights and successes, change and growth. It is about taking risks, opening yourself to true self-awareness and it takes courage. It takes constant self-development.

It takes knowing who you are authentically as a person and leader. Leadership isn't about title or role. It is about Mindset, Behaviour and ATTITUDE.

"Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position."  Brian Tracy

Ultimately it takes great people around you to help and support you to be the best you can be. A coach or advisor who is about trust, integrity, respect, growth and compassion.

This is why we love what we do. It is how we can show you and your teams how to lead, how to be leaders and why leadership matters.

We are that ripple effect.

Don’t suck as a leader. Be a great leader. A leader that leaves a legacy. A leader who wants to make a difference to those around them. A leader who shows courage.

You can be that leader. A leader that rocks!

Some very interesting insights. Thanks for sharing this Sonia. Often senior management particularly in my organisation do not value employee engagement. However, I try my best to show my best qualities as a team manager as I my staff look up to me as a representative of our organisation.
