Why employees are yearning for care, community and contribution

I regularly monitor employee engagement and culture research, and know that there is large percentage of employees who are yearning for more meaning, connection and community at work.

I recently discussed this on ABC TV

“Graeme Cowan is at the forefront of research around what is needed to thrive in the rapidly changing world of work. Our clients often engage Graeme beyond the event, to continue the conversation. He has his finger on the pulse of what business needs today.”

PETER JACK, FOUNDER, EMG EVENTS

Based on these insights I update the content of my keynote presentations and workshops. My 4 topics for 2019 /20 (more detail below):

·      HOW TO SUPPORT SOMEONE IN DISTRESS

·      3 SELF-CARE RITUALS FOR REMARKABLE RESULTS

·      3 SECRETS OF GREAT TEAMS

·      5 COMMANDMENTS OF TRULY CARING LEADERSHIP

We have already locked in a few presentations for R U OK? and Mental Health Month in October, so if you are planning a staff event and would like some more information on how I can be involved, just reply to this email, or email my Business Manager at [email protected].

HOW TO SUPPORT SOMEONE IN DISTRESS

A simple approach to help a workmate in the Red Zone

The CSIRO has recently nominated ‘rising stress and mental health issues’ as a megatrend that will thump Australian productivity for the next 20 years. In a team or 12, research shows that 3 employees will be living with depression, anxiety, or a substance abuse problem. Research conducted by R U OK? shows that most people would like to help a stressed colleague, but fear they could say the ‘wrong’ thing.

Based on the researching 4000+ people in Graeme’s book BACK FROM THE BRINK, he explains the simple ICARE framework. This will increase people’s confidence to:

●      Show they care

●      Ask R U OK?

●      Guide the person to help options

3 SELF-CARE RITUALS FOR REMARKABLE RESULTS

Small steps, robust resilience

In times of frantic activity, it can be easy to forget self-care, and yet if we do - we can’t care for others. We can’t give what we don’t have. Many people mistakenly believe that big changes are necessary to improve our life. It is by adopting small rituals that we can enjoy the direct link between self-care, resilience, and growth.

This presentation incorporates the latest research and provides practical steps to thrive on change. It includes:

●      The 3 elements of well-being - VIP: Vitality (physical), Intimacy (emotional), and Prosperity (contribution)

●      How to identify your wellbeing gaps

●      Choosing small rituals to build self-care, resilience, and growth

3 SECRETS OF GREAT TEAMS

Embracing care to outperform and outlast

As we rush into the digital revolution, workplaces can seem less human, and yet we all yearn to feel accepted for who we are. We want to be part of a supportive team, have a purpose that excites us, and have the opportunity to grow. At the core of great teams is a sense of belonging, enjoying each other’s company, and sincerely believing that our work mates a difference.

Based on the latest research into the best teams at innovation powerhouses like Google, Pixar, and IDEO, this presentation shares practical tips about how teams work better together. This is combined with the latest Australian research and includes:

●      The #1 predictor of best teams

●      How to build team meaning

●      Adopting rituals to boost motivation and progress

5 COMMANDMENTS OF TRULY CARING LEADERSHIP

A leadership blueprint for thriving teams

The more employees that strongly agree with this Gallup question: “My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.” – the higher the profit, productivity, customer service levels, and the longer an employee stays with the company. How can we build a culture of care?

The #1 predictor of a caring team is a caring leader. It is what leaders choose to do each day that determines whether a team is caring and outperforms. We are what we repeatedly do. This presentation outlines:

●      Self-care – and to care for others in the team – is the foundation to highly effective, sustainable, and innovative teams.

●      Allow each person to use their top strengths daily

●      Make it safe to be vulnerable and take moderate risks

●      Celebrate small steps of progress daily

●      If you are concerned about someone – ask R U OK?
