Why You Need to Hear Some Career Tough Love

I've called this the career tough-love issue for a reason.?

I speak to professionals daily who want something different for themselves in their careers.?

They know they are capable of so much more than what they are doing now.?

They want to transition to something new,?

They want to awaken their potential

They want to feel purpose in what they do.

And I love to help them to get there with career planning and specific tactical advice.

I'm passionate about helping others explore their career potential. I know because I've done it myself. I also know that if you want to make a positive change in your life, you need to help things along.?

When I started thinking about what it takes to make positive change, it reminded me of an old joke someone told me long ago, which I paraphrase here.

A Spirit told a man that he was guaranteed to win a life-changing amount of money on the lottery.?

The man was so excited about the prospect that he could barely contain his excitement about what he would do with all that money. He spent days planning how he would spend the money and the new life he would lead.

Weeks turned into months, and nothing. No lottery win materialised.

So the man returned to the Spirit to ask what was happening.??

The Spirit replied, 'Well, I don't understand why you haven't won? Your lottery ticket is guaranteed to win the top prize.'

And then the man said, surprised, 'Oh, you mean I have to buy a ticket?'

The Spirit rolled their eyes and said, Yes, you do! Not even I can help if you won't invest in a ticket!

And there it is — the point of resistance...

SELF-INVESTMENT.

We are halfway through the year

If your career wasn't going in the direction, you wanted six months ago, and you're still in the same place or situation. Now is the time to hatch a plan to move forward.??

Sometimes, you need to invest in yourself to help you make the necessary change.

You can, of course, read a couple of articles or buy a book.

Maybe look up a few motivational quotes.?

And whilst I love motivational quotes, I also appreciate that they don't give you the step-by-step know-how to complete the task, even though they deliver on the feel-good factor.?

Or you could invest in a coach to help you do what's necessary to move your career forward.

The truth is: Change requires change, and coaching is a low-risk, high-potential return on your future type of investment that will deliver a shift in mindset and a positive difference in your career.

I know that clients who fully commit to having an internal dialogue with themselves are the ones who will get the best results over the long term because they are all in.?

Sure, they want the processes and the lived experiences, but more importantly, they want to work with an expert with the know-how to get the results that move their career forward. No matter how much coaching and mentoring you receive, you will still need to overcome your resistance to doing things that make you feel uncomfortable or fearful. It takes work, focus and time investment in yourself.

If you want to change, something different has to happen. You'll need to take action. Not just once but continuously.

The next time you settle down to watch TV consider this. If you can commit to finishing a three-season box set on Netflix, perhaps you should consider committing to something that will pay dividends for your long-term future instead??

Until next time.
