Why You Need a Great Support Network at Your Place of Work.

Why You Need a Great Support Network at Your Place of Work.

We all have days where we just cannot be bothered.

I’m talking about the days when faking a smile or squeezing out another?‘how are you?’?traps you in a mental prison cell. Maybe you shattered a glass of orange juice before you left for work, and now you can’t stop picturing it crystalising inside the corners of your kitchen counters. Perhaps you almost scraped the side of a Mercedes going around a bend before you arrived where you are now. We’ve all had mornings that start B-A-D. They’re common.?

But what about when it’s something bigger or more insidious that’s on your mind? Something that’s turned your life upside down and left you hanging from the metaphorical ceiling. Now you’re running out of breath, energy, and strength, yet life keeps driving forward in fifth gear (whilst dragging you along with it face-first). Ouch.

Someone’s place of work can oftentimes be their place of refuge.?I mean that.?

When things are turning sour at home or elsewhere, whether that be finically, emotionally, or something else,?the support network you find at work can quite literally be lifesaving. A lot of time, and I will emphasise?a lot of the time, several brains are better than one. When it comes down to problem-solving, groups are far better than individuals. And when things aren’t going so well, a lot of advice and support is better than none. We can all attest to that, I’d think.

Support at work does two things: it builds the employee up personally as well as professionally. You want your employees, co-workers, and managers to feel supported outside of the office/workplace?as well?as inside said place.

So, how can we create a support network at work? Here, take my suggestions:

1) Start a mentor/guidance partner system. A lot of us could benefit from one-to-one support. Having a mentorship structure at your place of work will help encourage authentic and goal-oriented relationships that prioritise the well-being of employees. This could also go down the work-based support route. I mean building up an employee's work performance, i.e., development plans and progress monitoring. In this way, you're supporting them professionally and emotionally.

2) Create a way to vent. A lot of people won’t let things out unless they’re forced to. This might seem counter-intuitive, but trust me, it’s better out in the open than left to bubble and spill over six months down the line. Ignoring an issue, whether it’s something to do with work or the home, will diminish motivation and worsen negative emotions. Don’t be afraid to let it out. Employers, be receptive to an employee who needs to speak without judgement.

3) Don’t make it rigid; don’t try and make it all corporate, either. We’re all human, we can smell bureaucracy and red tape from a million miles away. Be real and authentic; care about those who work with you.
