Why you NEED a dashboard for your business!

Why you NEED a dashboard for your business!

There I was, merrily driving to Paris from London last year in my lovely classic car when the entire dashboard stopped working, it is a 1964 classic!. No speedo, no tacho, no oil temp, no water temp, in fact, no idea what I was doing or where I was going or when I'd get to my destination...

What a nightmare that would be in your business right? So would it surprise any of you reading this that 80% of the businesses I meet or work with do NOT have a dashboard or any KPIs for their business or their people? That should be a criminal offence in my book!

What is a KPI Dashboard?

A KPI (Key Performance Indicator) dashboard offers a visual representation of crucial performance metrics, enabling businesses to monitor their progress towards achieving their set objectives. This real-time data tool empowers managers to make data-driven decisions, fostering a competitive edge in the current business landscape.

Why Your Business Needs a KPI Dashboard

A KPI dashboard is a vital tool for any enterprise, facilitating effortless monitoring of the company's performance in relation to its strategic objectives. This assists business owners and leaders in making informed decisions and taking appropriate actions. This article discusses the significance of a KPI dashboard in a business and the process of creating one that measures relevant aspects of the company.

What do we need it to look like?

A KPI dashboard offers a visual representation of crucial performance metrics, enabling businesses to monitor their progress towards achieving their set objectives. It provides real-time data that assists managers in making informed decisions and taking timely actions, giving the organization a competitive edge in today's business landscape.

The Advantages of KPI Dashboards include:

1. Real-time visibility: A KPI dashboard provides real-time insights into the business performance, allowing quick identification and action on underperforming areas.

2. Promotes goal alignment: A KPI dashboard ensures that everyone in the organization is aligned towards the same objectives, enhancing the overall performance of the company.

3. Supports data-driven decision-making: A KPI dashboard fosters data-driven decision-making by providing the necessary data and insights, eliminating guesswork.

4. Enhances accountability: A KPI dashboard promotes accountability within the organization, facilitating performance tracking and ensuring targets are met.

Creating a KPI Dashboard for Your Business:

Establishing a KPI dashboard for your business involves several steps:

Step 1: Define the areas of the business to be measured, depending on the company's goals and objectives. For instance, if the aim is to increase revenue, measurements may include sales, customer acquisition, and customer retention.

Step 2: Determine the specific metrics to track. For instance, if sales is an area of focus, metrics could include total sales, sales by product, or sales by region.

Step 3: Identify the data sources and collection methods for each metric, which might include CRM software, accounting software, and website analytics tools.

Step 4: Design the dashboard in a way that is easy to read, understand, and customizable, so the most relevant metrics are always accessible.

Step 5: Implement the dashboard, integrate data sources, and set up automated data collection processes. Regular reviews and updates ensure the dashboard stays relevant to the business.

Examples of KPI Dashboards:

Dashboards can range from simple spreadsheets with a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) status to complex analytical reports. Often the simpler they are, the more effective their usage. If possible, invest in systems that automatically generate the needed information. Excel provides many variations of charts and graphs to illustrate performance, or you may want to look at a complete solution like Zoho for example. Find something to suit your business needs

In summary, a KPI dashboard is vital for any business as it provides real-time insights into the company's performance. Building a KPI dashboard involves defining areas of measurement, identifying specific metrics, establishing data sources and collection methods, designing the dashboard, and implementing it. Following these steps allows you to create a KPI dashboard that yields necessary data and insights for informed decision-making, enhancing the overall performance of the organization.

Failure to implement some form of dashboarding means like my drive to Paris, you cannot gauge how far you can go, with how much in your tank, or when you will get to your destination.

You should see some of the dashboards we have built for our clients in Zoho Analytics. It's a staggeringly good BI tool that doesn't get spoken about anywhere near enough. Happy to demo to anybody who is interested......!
