Why you need to consider experience and expertise when selecting a Functional Safety expert for your certification project

In our last article discussing factors to consider when selecting a functional safety expert, we looked at?Quality. In this second part, we examine Experience and Expertise.

Experience and Expertise

The engineers, technicians, and consultants at a testing and certification company should have real-world experience; giving you confidence that they understand different approaches and techniques, as well as the challenges of your industry and product. Ideally, there will be a mix of experienced engineers and technicians, innovative and cutting-edge technology technicians, and professional project managers who work together to achieve the best possible results for your project. Together, the team will also have an in-depth understanding of the regulatory and certification significance of the product.

When looking at a provider’s expertise, it is important to consider your own product and industry, and your desired outcome. A key factor is whether the team who will be working on your product has the relevant experience for the project. Each product and industry have its own distinct challenges, so working with an organization that understands yours is paramount.

Another aspect to consider is whether you are looking for a provider who will simply report findings and rely on you for direction on how to proceed, or, are you looking for an organization that has the experience and knowledge within their teams to problem solve in real-time, bringing you recommended solutions. This is particularly important when unexpected and problematic results arise. Solving issues in real-time can help to avoid delays in your product development.

Don’t underestimate the power of a partner who can think strategically. There are often many intricacies that need to be considered for each individual program. Their experience in your industry or product area may provide unique insights. Good functional safety providers utilize that experience to tailor their approach to your product. In addition, they will help you in predicting and problem-solving issues and technical complexities before they arise, working with you to develop the most appropriate course of action

For complex projects having a professional, experienced project manager can be the difference between your project running smoothly or encountering delays. Ideally, the project manager works with the engineering lead who provides technical oversight of the whole project. Supporting them should be a dedicated team, each member being experienced in their specific discipline.

If done well, the whole team will closely work together to make sure the goals of your project are met, on time and within budget.?When considering experience and expertise, it’s worth looking beyond just engineering and technical skills; you should look wider within your provider.

By providing this rounded expertise and experience, the functional safety provider can guide you through the safety testing process to ensure you achieve your project's objectives.
