Why you might need an adventure

Why you might need an adventure

A restless feeling can be hard to shake. For anybody who’s stuck in a slump, the answer may be embarking on a new adventure, Arthur C. Brooks writes. Make no mistake, these adventures don’t require a transcontinental odyssey or a harrowing brush with danger. The spirit of adventure is trying something new and opening yourself up to the possibility of discovery; that can look like investing in an unfamiliar experience, picking up a fantasy book, or making a reservation at that restaurant you’ve been meaning to visit for months. “When life is getting you down,” Brooks writes, “the answer is not more comfort but less.”

Today’s newsletter brings you stories about finding new adventures:

  • Why You Might Need an Adventure ,” by Arthur C. Brooks. In a rut? Try shaking things up.
  • Buy Experiences, Not Things ,” by James Hamblin. Live in anticipation, gathering stories and memories. (From 2014)
  • Five Books That Conjure Entirely New Worlds ,” by Jeff VanderMeer. The best-written stories can make readers feel as if they have passed through mundane states of being and been brought over to another universe.
  • Our Last Great Adventure ,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. “My husband, Richard Goodwin, drafted landmark speeches for JFK and LBJ. Late in life, we dived into his archives, searching for vivid traces of our hopeful youth.”
  • Quit Your Bucket List ,” by Richard A. Friedman. Trying new things is great—but only until you find the ones you love.

Sometimes, a restless mind just needs something new. I remember trying a cooking class without any expectations—and finding a whole new passion. As Brooks says, growth is outside the comfort zone. What’s one small adventure you’ve been putting off?
