Why You Are Not Landing The Job You Actually Want

In today’s article, I’m going to talk about why you are not landing the job you actually want and what you can do about it. But before I do that, I think it's important to differentiate the three types of opportunities: "A"opportunities, "B" opportunities, and "C" opportunities.
"C" Opportunities
These are the kinds of jobs that, when they cross your path and you do your research, there is nothing in you that wants to go after the role. Unfortunately, these jobs are plentiful—no matter the industry or level. They make up about 50% of all jobs out there.
"B" Opportunities
These are the kinds of jobs that, after doing your research, don’t really move the needle for you. However, you might find yourself in a position where you just need a job. I completely understand that. Sometimes these "B" opportunities start leaning towards the "C" opportunities where people end up saying, “I sent in my resume and had the first interview, but to be honest, I’m hoping I don’t hear back from the company.” In other words, you knew from the get-go that it wasn’t the right fit.
"A" Opportunities
These are the sought-after roles. These are the kinds of opportunities that, when you hear about them and do your research, you are unapologetically excited. You know this is what you've been looking for. This job matters, and what you put on your resume and how you interview will determine whether you get invited to that conversation and, ultimately, whether you get the offer.
When people are pursuing these kinds of jobs—hopefully, the jobs they actually want—they often run into one of three bottlenecks:
1. The Resume Bottleneck
Your resume is just not working. You’re not getting the interviews for the "A" opportunities. You have no problem getting interviews for "B" and "C" opportunities, but not for these high-value jobs. This means we need to revise, tweak, or sometimes overhaul your resume to demonstrate your value clearly. If they can’t see the value, they’re not going to invite you in for a conversation.
2. The Interview Bottleneck
Your resume is working, and you’re getting interviews for "A" opportunities, but you’re not getting past that first interview or you’re constantly getting down to the final two or three candidates but not getting the offer. There’s a disconnect in how you interview. There’s something we need to remove or add to your approach, and that’s something I’ve helped many people with.
3. The Opportunity Bottleneck
You’re struggling to find "A" opportunities. Everything you’re looking at makes you roll your eyes. Where do you find these opportunities? For years, I’ve taught people to be proactive—reach out to companies and connect with the hiring authority before they post the role. This way, you become candidate number one of one with the decision maker instead of resume 170 of 400 after the position is made public.
