Joining startup? Are you crazy?

Joining startup? Are you crazy?

Why are you joining start-up ?

  • Are you crazy?
  • Dude! You need a reality check !
  • Why are you leaving such a cushy job?
  • What if the start-up shuts down in a few days?

These will be some of the thoughts from near and dear ones! But here’s what should excite you, if looking to join a start-up !

Autonomy:

You get to implement what you have learned in your MBA, read in books and be in tune with the times. People will listen to your ideas here.  In a corporate, hierarchical organization; you keep shouting on top of your lungs and no one gives a damn; after sometime you give up and just follow instructions! In a start-up, you table what you think is right; and people will accept with open arms if it’s logical and can add value.

Execute- Your thoughts take shape:

It doesn't stop there, you gotta put your thoughts into action ! Make it happen!!

You realize after joining in start-up that you might have been a corporate slave all through your life. May be people have lesser ego here; have their work cut out always; here people are more than happy if you roll up your sleeves and make it happen.

Responsibility:

People start looking up to you ! Especially if you have joined in a role, where you can influence and make a difference. So you gotta deliver, there’s no two ways about it!

You feel, 'what you are doing is making a difference':

You might think its crap, you have read over the years in books but it’s actually true ! You would wanna work your ass off and make a difference; especially, when you see the decisions you take making a significant impact. You will love that feeling ! #You get wings

Freedom:

Freedom to express yourself, be yourself, wear what you like, speak your mind ! Ok, when was the last time you did it?

That’s it?:

You will find startups with ESOPs, quarterly appraisals, incentives, disproportionate rewards to those who are doing well; rewards will be both monetary and in the form of career advancement!

Icing on the cake:

You need not make those excel sheets, PPTs for days together; those backup slides which no one will ever take a look!

You will most likely to be among people who are passionate; wanna make something worthwhile; leave a mark in this world.. The feeling rubs on to you; What more do you want?

Disclaimer:

Not all the startups, will be the same, so make sure you do your research. Depends upon the stage of funding they are at.

The best part of working in a startup is that very few know how to handle the mess (which exits 24*7). So if you have an answer and are ready to slog for it then you own it. Such an ownership makes legends.?

Abhishek Dad It is a double edged sword ! At a startup there is always a chance, to create something new, as there is more autonomy, you will find people who are ready to embrace change. In a large organisations, there are polices, procedures which people have to follow. Unless, you are at a senior position it is difficult to influence people/become a change agent. There is a chance that, someone who has worked in a startup environment will find it choked to work a larger organisation if he/she joins in middle management.

For any of reasons it is great working in startup..established companies (non-commerce) should also recruit people from e commerce due to their efficient performance shown without any set procedures/guidelines, big ad-hoc responsibilities taken and Delivering results through carving out or rather ruling out traditional practices..

What excites me here is, the exposure I get to be a part of a fastest growing team (Talking about TFS) while doing a lots of experiments & learning from each one of them. You get an opportunity to chase that Big Hairy Audacious Goal, which in turn boosts up your own confidence level. A place where you witness 30% - 40% MOM growth. We hardly get such chances in an established co.

All the above-mentioned points(and more)are the reasons why it's a sinful indulgence for me. At times, when I'm really down, I fantasize being in an empowered role in a liberating start-up doing exactly what I believe in doing and coming home back tired, content AND still looking forward to the next day. :-)
