Why You Haven’t Lost Weight This Week (And Why It’s Not a Problem)

As a business owner, you know the importance of commitment and perseverance. You’ve set your sights on improving your health, feeling more energetic, and maybe even fitting into that suit or dress that’s been hanging in the back of your wardrobe for a while. You’ve hired a coach, determined that this time, it’s going to be different.
You’re following the plan, staying on track with your nutrition, and feeling positive about your progress. But then, the weekly weigh-in rolls around, and the number on the scale isn’t what you expected. No movement – or worse, it’s gone up. It’s frustrating, confusing, and makes you question all the hard work you’ve put in.
But here’s the key thing: this moment doesn’t define your progress or your success.
The Scales Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
The problem with the scale is that it only tells you your total body weight – it doesn’t distinguish between fat, muscle, water, or even the weight of your last meal. Think of it like trying to measure your business's success purely by turnover, without taking into account profit margins, customer satisfaction, or growth potential. You’re missing critical information.
Your body is complex. Daily weight fluctuations can be caused by hydration levels, salt intake, muscle gain, or even stress. These small changes are completely normal and don’t mean you’re not making progress.
For example, you could have a great week of workouts and nutrition, and end up holding onto water due to increased muscle recovery. That might cause a temporary increase on the scales, but in reality, you’re building strength, improving your metabolism, and making strides towards your long-term goal.
Measure What Really Matters
If the scales aren’t the best tool to measure your progress, what is? The real question is, why are you trying to lose weight in the first place? What’s your true motivation?
Is it to feel more confident in meetings or to have more energy to keep up with your demanding schedule? Maybe it’s to feel healthier, reduce stress, or even improve your focus and productivity.

Once you’ve identified your "why" you can measure progress in a way that truly reflects your goals. Instead of focusing solely on the scale, consider how your clothes fit, how much stronger or more energetic you feel, or even how your stress levels have decreased. You’re not just looking for a number on a scale – you’re aiming for a healthier, more productive, and balanced life.
Focus on Long-Term Benefits, Not Short-Term Frustrations
Running a business requires you to look at the big picture. You know success doesn’t come overnight – it’s built through consistent effort, adaptation, and a focus on long-term goals. Your health and fitness journey is no different.
Yes, you might want to lose body fat, but the most important thing is how you feel day-to-day. When you prioritise healthy habits, you’ll notice more sustainable energy levels, improved mood, better sleep, and greater resilience to stress – all of which directly impact your productivity and overall well-being.
Just like in business, when you shift your focus from short-term results to long-term benefits, you’ll find more success and enjoyment in the process.
Why You Shouldn’t Worry About This Week’s Weigh-In
This week’s number on the scale doesn’t determine your success. Your real progress is happening in ways that aren’t always immediately visible. By staying committed to your journey, focusing on how you feel, and measuring progress in a way that reflects your true goals, you’ll achieve the results that matter most – both in your body and your business.
Remember, this is about creating a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle, not just hitting a particular number. Keep going, and the results will follow.
