WHY YOU HAVEN'T ACHIEVED YOUR GOALS
The kids and I got cozy on the sofa ready to watch Peter Rabbit the movie. During the opening credits, a flock of birds broke out in song, as they flew over idyllic British countryside.
A particular excerpt from the lyrics caught my attention ;
‘You’re altitude is a reflection of your attitude’
WOW
We already know there are great dreamers amongst us , you might be one too.
I’m a dreamer, but I’m also an action taker, a doer. I get things done.
Dream then do
I’ve been exploring the concept of grit for an age, and have recently started blogging about it.
For me, learning how to become grittier about our goals is the answer to transforming your life. Grit is how our kids will survive and thrive an age where they live and work with robots, automation, a deeply divided society and savaged planet.
Grit, creativity and negotiation
Along with creativity and negotiating, grit will become the critical skill to master and teach in our classrooms and boardrooms.
So what has all this got to do with altitude and attitude? To reach any form of growth, there needs to be action.
Within the GAP is where all action occurs.....or not
The GAP is the space between the ‘idea in our head ‘and the ‘dreamy outcome’ ALSO in our head.
The GAP is the external arena where all the external actions MUST occur, to make the internal ideas and dreams a reality. If there is no action, there is simple an empty vacum of space and time.
What you do in the GAP, is what will define your altitude aka your growth, the rise of you !
Planes
Let’s look at flying a plane as an analogy. The plane on the ground represents our ideas and dreams. We have this vehicle that ‘could’ take us to our dreamy exotic destinations.
To take us to our faraway dreamy lands, there is a gap between the plane’s current grounded position and the sky. The plane of course must travel through this gap to reach the land we can picture in our head.
For the plane to lift-off and travel, a series of actions are required. Without the actions, the plane remains grounded (the idea remains in our head) and the dreams of the dreamy lands, remain dreams of dreamy lands in our head.
So what gets the plane to close the GAP? Actions are what closes the gap. Of course the pilot and crew are the ones who initiate those actions.
What makes that pilot and crew members take action? Well a plethora of needs-based and personal motivations ensure the pilot and crew report for work and take out those actions.
Likewise, in order for us to reach our own personal altitudes, everything depends on our ability to take ACTION.
Nothing else bar action ensures we close the gap and reach altitude
The depth and scope of our actions depends on our GRIT levels. How gritty are we about taking all the micro and macro actions every single day, to close the GAP and reach our desired level of altitude?
Grit is part of your attitude, your makeup , your wiring. So indeed your attitude determines your altitude. If you are a blamer, a victim, a gossiper or an opinionated judger…..this is your attitude.
You are choosing to blame, gossip, hold a pity party, and cast judgements in YOUR GAP !!!
So guess what, if that’s how you spend your time during your GAP space, you aren’t going to fly very high.
Only action in the GAP gets you to altitude, which takes you places.
So ask yourself right now, what do you do in your GAP? Meaning all those ideas and dreams locked in your head right now, what are the actions you are taking OUTSIDE OF YOUR HEAD (in the gap), to grow your altitude (to grow you)?
If you can’t think of many daily actions you are committing to on a daily basis, guess what? Your plane will remain grounded on the runaway, and eventually rust and become useless and be sent to the scrapyard.
A grounded plane is no good to anyone, and it’s the worst possible outcome for yourself.
Get busy taking action in your GAP to fly your plane at altitude. It’s the only way to rise.
