Why You Don't Want To Get Interviews Because You're Over 40/50/60

Why You Don't Want To Get Interviews Because You're Over 40/50/60

When you get an interview because you're in your 40's, 50's and 60's it's usually an interview you don't want.

It's because companies schedule interviews with age 40+ candidates to pump up the statistics of age 40+ interviews. This statistic is reported to government, along with other demographic interview data - This also protects employers from age discrimination lawsuits.

HR departments need to make sure the number of age 40+ job interviews meet minimum levels, to stay in compliance with hiring laws, protect themselves from legal risk and keep state and federal auditors from investigating their hiring practices.

So employers regularly schedule a percentage of their interviews with age 40, 50, and 60+ job seekers to make sure they protect themselves ... because they're over 40, not because they are being considered for hire. And if an employer is concerned they might be light on age 40+ interviews, it's easy to "juice" their numbers by simply scheduling a bunch of interviews with age 40+ candidates.

These are called compliance interviews, and if you don't think they exist, Google "Wells Fargo fake interviews" to find stories from a few years ago about compliance interviews that the large bank had been scheduling for the past 30 years. Some companies schedule compliance interviews for up to 50% of their interview spots, to document why they aren't going to hire candidates from certain demographic groups, including age 40+ job seekers.

Because compliance interviews are only intended to cover the butts of an HR department, but not intended to hire you, they are a total waste of your time.

Sometimes you can even tell that you're in a compliance interview:

  • Disengaged interviewers
  • Interviewers asking only the "standard list" of questions
  • Don't encourage your questions
  • Answer questions you do ask quickly, with little detail
  • Take calls, return texts or emails during your interview
  • It just feels like an interviewer is trying to get you off a voice/Zoom call, or out of their office.

If you're over 40 and getting too many compliance interviews, don't you want to learn how to land more "real" interviews, ones where an employer is interested in hiring you? Let me show you how ...
