Why You Don’t Have to Earn Self Care

Why You Don’t Have to Earn Self Care

Self care is a buzzword that you may have heard a lot lately. But what does it really mean, and why is it so important?

Self care is the practice of taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It can include anything from getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, meditating, reading, journaling, pampering yourself, or doing something that makes you happy.

Self care is not a luxury or a reward, but a necessity and a right for everyone. It is not selfish, but essential. You deserve it, and you need it.

The Myth of Earning Self Care

As a coach, I often work with clients who struggle with self care. They feel that they have to earn it as a reward for working hard first. They think that self care is a luxury or a sign of weakness, and that they don’t deserve it unless they achieve their goals.

But this is a harmful mindset that can lead to stress, burnout, exhaustion, and resentment. It can also affect your productivity, creativity, and performance. When you neglect your own needs, you are not able to give your best to yourself or others.

Self care is not something that you have to earn, but something that you have to prioritize. It is not something that you do after you finish your work, but something that you do to support your work. It is not something that you do once in a while, but something that you do every day.

The Benefits of Self Care

Self care has many benefits for your personal and professional life. Here are some of them:

  • Self care helps you reduce stress and improve your mood. When you take care of yourself, you are more likely to feel calm, relaxed, and happy. You are also more resilient and able to cope with challenges.
  • Self care helps you boost your health and prevent illness. When you take care of yourself, you are more likely to have a strong immune system, lower blood pressure, and better digestion. You are also less likely to suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression.
  • Self care helps you increase your energy and focus. When you take care of yourself, you are more likely to have enough rest, nutrition, and hydration. You are also more alert and attentive, and able to concentrate on your tasks.
  • Self care helps you enhance your creativity and innovation. When you take care of yourself, you are more likely to have a clear mind, a positive outlook, and a curious attitude. You are also more open to new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities.
  • Self care helps you strengthen your relationships and communication. When you take care of yourself, you are more likely to have a high self-esteem, a healthy boundary, and a respectful manner. You are also more empathetic, compassionate, and supportive of others.

How to Practice Self Care

Self care is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It is different for everyone, depending on your personality, preferences, and needs. The key is to find what works for you, and make it a habit.

Here are some tips to help you practice self care:

  • Identify your needs. What are the areas of your life that need more attention and care? What are the things that make you feel good and energized? What are the things that drain you and stress you out?
  • Set your goals. What are the outcomes that you want to achieve with your self care? How do you want to feel, think, and act? How do you want to improve your personal and professional life?
  • Create your plan. What are the actions that you can take to meet your needs and goals? How can you incorporate them into your daily, weekly, and monthly routine? How can you make them easy, enjoyable, and rewarding?
  • Track your progress. How can you measure your results and celebrate your achievements? How can you monitor your challenges and overcome your obstacles? How can you adjust your plan and stay flexible?
  • Seek support. Who are the people that can help you with your self care? How can you ask for their help and feedback? How can you join or create a community of like-minded people who share your values and vision?
