It seems the first principle of business is to create a business plan. Even as the company matures, it needs a strategic plan to continue to grow profitably. Or, if a non-profit, to continue to complete the mission for its constituency. But, it's useless for a plan to be created and stored on a shelf. It cannot and should not be a "thing" but an active process to build for the future. To that end, begin with the end in mind.
A plan, business or strategic, is intended to be build on a solid foundation yet provide a view from the top. It cascades from top to bottom, continually flowing.
