Before I begin, I truly believe this: Who you are at your worst during the interview is who you are at your best in front of customers. ?
Cliff Notes: You can get your first medical device job without your uncle being the CEO of the company.?Learn how to approach, talk to and make a quick connection with strangers.?
You don’t know anybody (more specifically - nobody knows you)?
I start here because it’s the most alarming thing I hear salespeople say, “you only get those jobs if you know somebody”.?The way I translate that is - “I’m solely a relationship salesperson so I won’t move the business unless the customer likes and/or knows me”. 12 Years ago when I was approached to interview for this company, I only knew the person asking as the nice guy that wears scrubs from the gym.?Your ability to approach, be compelling and build rapport with complete strangers is imperative in medical device jobs. Platforms like the one you are reading this on, give you the opportunity to “know” almost anybody.?You see their picture, full work history, the things they are interested in (groups and pages they follow) and even how they think (posts made and comments under posts).?LinkedIn is a gold mine for finding topics and people that can help build the connections that result in job offers. ?
“All the information you need to effectively cold call a customer is online. All the information you need to be more competitive in a job interview is also online”
So what if that mean hiring manager won’t respond to your DMs or accept your connection request? Well lucky for you, LinkedIn allows you to see connections you have in common with them. What if you followed their connections and identify the members of their team? Imagine the impact you would make on a hiring manager if you spoke to,?even met with, multiple members of his/her team prior to the interview. Take the same approach as you would in an interview when talking to members of his/her team and you will create allies.?Allies that have some level of influence over hiring managers, know how to help you navigate the hiring process and potentially keys to success in the role.?

Would that increase your odds??
Lastly - If a hiring manager is on LinkedIn, so is their talent sourcing team.?The recruiter will often mention the person in the job posting or you can usually connect the dots back to them. Tip: If you are having a hard time finding the recruiter, find the company’s corporate LinkedIn page, navigate to their open jobs. Here is your treasurer chest of people looking to find talented people to fill open roles.?
I’ve seen seven figure deals get negotiated and signed by the CFO without even a conversation with him/her. Why? Well it’s because the influence & support around them to get the deal done was bigger than any single relationship. Create the same energy around hiring managers and you will land your first medical device job!?
The first time I interviewed with my current company, they didn’t hire me.?I eventually found myself in a second process with 15 other candidates and I was the only one without an employee referral or device experience.?
Ignore your inner critic, take feedback/coaching, apply some of these tips and change your life.?Part 2 of 3 coming next month!
