Why You Aren’t Landing That New Job

Hey LinkedIn fam!
It’s my inaugural newsletter and I thought I’d get spicy with ya.
I wanted to lay it on the line…why you aren’t landing that new job you really want.
'Cause you definitely want out of your current one…right? But damn the constant looking for jobs, applying, and getting that “Nah…we are looking for something different” email is driving you up the wall.
I get it.
And first off…it might be time to try something a bit different.
So here are my top tips to take your job search from crickets to offers.
Tip #1: Stop acting like you can do this without help
Oh, I see you…and I’m not trying to throw shade. But that attitude of “I can do it all on my own” isn’t serving you in your job search. Do not seclude yourself during this process. Lean on your existing professional community and create a new one. This is the moment to do something totally uncomfortable…put yourself out there.
The very first thing I tell all my clients to do when kickstarting a job search is to let people know by sending the “Help a Sista Out” email to all your immediate connections. And here is what you should consider when creating the perfect email outreach message.
Give your message a strong start. Let your connection know you are job hunting.
Provide links to the last 2-3 positions you applied to. This gives your connection an idea of what you’re looking for now.
Don’t forget the ask. Think about how this person can help you and make a strong ask. Can they connect you to someone in their network? Would you like to discuss your job search with them via phone? Don’t leave out this pivotal piece.
Attach your resume. Give the connection an idea of what you have done and your career trajectory.
This form of networking has helped so many clients land some valuable information about new opportunities and companies. And it can help you too!
Tip #2: Stop applying to EVERYTHING
Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? Wrong!
While it is not necessary to have 100% of the job requirements to apply, you shouldn’t apply to a job in which you aren’t qualified. And you for sure shouldn’t apply to a role you don’t want.
The thought of “If I apply to more than my chances of getting a call-back increase” is not accurate.
If you aren’t a good fit, then you can’t tailor your resume and cover letter to the role. And that is one of the most important ways to get a call back.
So, STOP APPLYING to everything and really focus your search on the following:
- What you want
- What you want to do
- Where you want to work
Tip #3: Get Your Mind Right
Do not neglect reading this tip. Because honestly it is the most important one.
I know what it’s like to want out of your current job.
You’ve checked out already.
Are trying to do the bare minimum but kind of feel shitty not having something to give your all to.
You internally roll your eyes when your boss gives you yet another shitty task.
You just straight up have a bad attitude about the whole damn thing.
Now I’ll ask you a legit question…How do you think that attitude is affecting your job search? How do you think it is affecting your ability to put a positive vibe and energy into your next thing?
I’ll answer that for ya…it has a HUGE effect on how you present yourself.
So get your mind right to seriously have an impact on your job search.
Think positive thoughts about your search.
And neutral ones about your current job, boss, and company. Notice I said NEUTRAL, not happy. I’m not telling you to be fake about anything.
Leaning away from negativity can be a big jolt to your search and simply to your outlook.
All right peeps. That is it for me and for the first newsletter.
