Why you (or already do) suck at your 9-5.

You're most likely reading this because you work a 9-5 job. Which let me make it clear, is totally fine! For several years I worked a 9-5 job and the majority of the time, I loved it. It provided structure, organization and most importantly security to my life.
This is not an article of why you should quit your 9-5, start selling essential oils to middle aged women and post on it on facebook a minimum of 3x per day.
After leaving my 9-5, I didn't start a business. I didn't become an independent seller of products. What I did was work in a start up, entrepreneurial business.
So what's the difference?
I put a lot of thought on this and why life is much more productive and fulfilling. It came down to one thing:
I am treated like an adult.
Yes, I have a general time I need to be at an office. Yes, I have a desk. Yes, I have set tasks and check-in meetings of what I'm working on. Yes, I have responsibilities.
But I have trust. I am trusted that my tasks that need to be accomplished, will be completed on time and at the best of my ability.
If I am sick, no worries. They know I'll get my tasks done. If I need to leave part way through the day, no worries. They know that what I didn't get done at the office, I'll finish at home.
Do you know what that level of trust does to a person? It makes them want to succeed. It makes them want to work harder, work smarter. It creates loyalty and dedication.
One of the primary reasons that most people suck at their 9-5 job is because there is no trust placed on them. What is placed on them instead is an anxiety to make sure you are at your cubical at 9:00am on the dot. That you don't leave the office a second before that clock hand hits 5:00pm. When you need to take care of your significant other, or your children that you...can't. Instead you are filled with worries while you are supposed to be productive.
Worried if your child is ok at school because they called and said they threw up and want to come home, but you can't afford to leave work a few hours early. Filled with worry because you need to pick up your wife or husband from the airport but you don't think you'll be able to get off of work in time and they'll have to either wait at the airport for hours or take an expensive Uber.
Not only that, but without trust placed on an employee, an employee will feel they:
- Can't see the overall benefits of all the hard work
- (obvious) had to work 9-5
- No passion
- No room for growth
- Can't experiment and bring ideas
- Use systems and processes that don't work for them
Companies and leaders that treat their employees with trust and the responsibility that is expected of adults, are going to gain loyal, hardworking and most importantly happy employees.
But that's just me, what do you think about trust being instilled into employees?
Do you think more companies should treat their employees as adults?

6 年Nice article. I’d say I work a traditional “9-5” but my company employs all of the same values you outlined here. They do trust their employees and ultimately productivity is the outcome. If you trust someone enough to hire them, you should trust them to get the job done...no matter what time of day or where their butt is currently placed.
