Why Writers Should Try ChatGPT

Why Writers Should Try ChatGPT

If you've been following the recent ChatGPT craze, you probably know what's happening. What I have been curious about is how it is going to impact writers.

Over the past few weeks, I've been testing out the free version of ChatGPT and have some insights to share.

Making friends with the enemy

As a fellow writer, I don't want to be burned at stake for letting ChatGPT into my life. I feel it is ignorant not to learn about ChatGPT. It's making waves for a reason.

But will it replace writers?

I don't think it will. In my opinion, it would be a support system for content creators. But if that day comes, it is better to have found a way around it than wait and do nothing.

For now, I believe it can make us efficient in areas that can be automated.

It’s your Samwise Gamgee

"I know. It's all wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But we are."

- Samwise Gamgee, The Lord of the Rings series.

How apt.

We are here, and so is ChatGPT, so let's shake hands and get on with it.

ChatGPT for writers Sam and Frodo example

We do not need to ask ChatGPT, "Write a blog about an XYZ topic, use a particular keyword and keep the word count to 1000 words," and copy the entire result without a thought.

The idea is to make it do all the laborious work for you, and you can refine it as required.

Like Sam said, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!"

?

ChatGPT doing all the work is a bad, bad idea!

How would you like a job where you input a few lines in software that's free to use, and it does your job for you, and you get paid for it?

Sounds too good to be true? Because it is!

If you go into lazy mode, this is what could happen.

So I asked ChatGPT to write me 2 stories on similar topics.

?And I then compared them with Copyscape for duplication.

So, as you just saw, much of that content will be similar. You and 10 other writers who search for the same thing would get a massive chunk of similar content. I am talking plagiarism galore.

HENCE, THEREFORE and THUS, it is best to avoid the 'easy peasy' Ctrl C and Ctrl V.

Here's my take on how ChatGPT can help writers

You can use Chat GPT to:

  • Come up with fresh ideas
  • Figure out the best keywords to use
  • Check for nuances
  • Work on the tone

For instance, in the above story example (Image 2), Chat GPT changed something based on the brief, which I felt was smart.

The 1st story is about a couple, and the 2nd one is about a teen couple. ChatGPT used this 'teen' keyword and tweaked the approach.

What could a teen gift, how would teens behave, and what would they say to each other? It paid attention to such fine details. These things make a huge impact when personalising content.

"ChatGPT, I see what you did there."

You can even check for tone. Here's something I tried to test ChatGPT.

It is interesting to see how ChatGPT used a sarcastic and satirical tone. It is a humorous yet somewhat unconventional take.

To conclude

If you're a writer looking to level up your game, give ChatGPT a shot.

But remember, don't think of it as a magic wand that will solve all your writing problems. It's a tool to assist you in your writing journey. So, use it wisely and make sure to put in your creative efforts too.

With ChatGPT by your side, you can make your writing process smoother, faster, and better.

Thank you for reading this, and I appreciate your view.
