Why Would We Use Video?

Video conferencing is a funny thing in most environments. Sometimes, companies can't imagine how they'd use video. They've never "needed" video before and can't imagine how it would help them.
Take, for example, a company that has been in business for over 50 years. They've grown substantially over those 50 years and have made incremental investments in IT infrastructure, improved phone systems, even laptops for employees out in the field. When they hired new leadership in IT and the suggestion was made that they adopt a video collaboration strategy, it was met with extreme resistance.
"Why would we use video?"
Ultimately, the answers came flooding in that video could reduce travel expense to visit with customers and share new programs and product features. They are able to reach more customers more quickly in a personal video environment. I say that, because a phone call can be impersonal, less intimate, and doesn't give them a chance to actually SHOW their products and improved services.
Then came the realization that the Marketing Manager, who had moved to another state, was traveling back and forth to collaborate with the marketing team. Working over video meant that she could collaborate more frequently with her team. She could spend valuable time with her children without having to arrange for child care, and her time spent was far more productive without driving or flying back and forth.
Then Human Resources chimed in with their frustrations of bringing people in for interviews and the struggles they faced with phone interviews to prequalify candidates. A secure video environment for them meant that they could screen applicants, conduct "in-person" interviews and reference candidate resumes over video. HR also noted that being able to record on-boarding and training sessions meant they could re-deliver content without crippling their bandwidth as a small department.
The Sales Department came back with the benefits of monthly sales meetings that include field salespeople who had traditionally either traveled to a regional office or participated by phone (Picture the speakerphone sitting in the middle of the conference table). With video, the regional teams were able to meet and share sale reports and forecasts in video meetings so everyone could actually see financial results and plan together more effectively for upcoming expectations.
Surprisingly, the CEO was convinced to deliver his quarterly Town Hall updates to all employees and shareholders via a streaming video feed so that everyone could see him on video (instead of a bland email or broadcast voicemail).
Ultimately, video was always an option for the company, but they couldn't imagine the ways it would reduce costs and allow for greater collaboration and communication.
