Why would trees sleep?

I had to laugh. I didn’t believe in witches. There were too many things that made little sense to me, and the idea of a witch being a part of my life was just ludicrous. If there were any witches, it wasn’t because I was seeing them. It was because I wanted to see them.
“The town is really dead,” I told her. “It’s as though there’s no life in the place. Even the trees are dying.” “Maybe they’re not,” Myra said, staring at me with those hazel eyes. “Maybe they’re just sleeping.” “Why would they sleep?” I asked. “Because they can’t wake up. Because they don’t want to wake up.” “Oh, okay,” I said, thinking that it was all crazy. Then again, maybe that was why she had been sent to me.?
“I think I should go back home now,” I told her. “I’ve had enough for one day.” “Okay,” Myra said. “Just don’t forget your lunch box.” I went back to the house and closed the door. It was quiet in the house, and it felt like we were all sleeping. I wondered if they really were asleep, or if they were just pretending to be asleep so that they could see what was happening to us. I didn’t think they were pretending, though. They seemed too sad.
