Why work for yourself in Dynamics 365??
So I’ll start by saying that I’m slightly biased as I also work for myself, so will rant and rave over the benefits to anyone who is unfortunate enough to ask me. That being said, for the past 11 years I have worked as a Microsoft Recruiter specialising in the placement of contractors, so have heard many a perspective on the benefits (and drawbacks) of being self-employed in the Microsoft Dynamics space.
Let’s get the most obvious point out of the way. It’s not for everyone. On the whole, people who want to build a career built on promotions, or people who need the near-100% certainty of a monthly income + paid holidays (+ Friday beers!) will need to be employed.
Working for yourself is often seen as risky. “What if I can’t find work?”, “what if there’s a recession?” or “what if XYZ happens?” are things I hear on a weekly basis. Honestly I have never seen a GOOD consultant unable to find reliable work and if for whatever reason they are not working, it's most probably down to their choice to take a break.
The money can be excellent. The fact that contracting is paid as a daily rate and via a Ltd Company structure, pretty much means that your take home pay doubles. That’s right, doubles. So if you were on an £80k salary last year and this year have been working as a contractor, you COULD take home the equivalent of a £160k salary. Also, you can chuck loads of money into a pension in a very tax efficient way which is awesome.

Lastly the obvious benefit is flexibility. Yes, you will have a set amount of work to do but you are largely free to complete it to your own timescales. You also won’t have a boss who has the power of life and death over your career.
From doing this job for 11 years, I’d say the benefits of working for yourself far outweigh the drawbacks.

2 年Whilst without doubt it depends on the type of role the contractor fulfills, I have found that being a contractor enables one to have a bigger impact for good on the customer's business as you are not seen to have a hidden agenda.

2 年One element you didn’t mention is the ability to undertake real training. I can choose which training courses to do, when to do them and importantly I get to set them as a priority. I do not believe that an employed role similar to mine would truly permit the amount of constant courses, reading, practising that is needed within a normal working hours role. The productivity rate would be perceived as too low.

2 年Interesting read thanks, Jon. One drawback I feel you have overlooked in the mobility aspects of working for yourself. Post covid working patterns have changed and I cannot see a return to the old ways but there is more liklihood of fluctuating travel needs especially if you are working on shorter term contracts. Again i undermine my own point as it’s not really something we are seeing yet but more face time need is returning and its typically driven by customer need/want so the lack of job consistency also brings lack of travel consistency in my view
