In recent years, the Government of India has implemented a series of welfare schemes aimed at uplifting the rural populace. While these initiatives intend to provide essential support, they have inadvertently fostered a culture of dependency among rural citizens. The extensive array of freebies—ranging from subsidized food and housing to cash incentives and free utilities—has diminished the motivation to work, leading many to question the necessity of employment when life's necessities are readily provided.
This phenomenon reflects the adage "Rob Peter to pay Paul," where the working taxpayer's contributions fund these extensive welfare programs. Political parties have leveraged such schemes as tools to secure votes, often prioritizing short-term electoral gains over sustainable economic development. This strategy not only burdens the nation's fiscal health but also cultivates a sense of entitlement, undermining individual enterprise and self-reliance.
The critical question arises: Are these freebies empowering the rural populace, or are they creating a cycle of dependency that hampers long-term progress? As the government continues to distribute benefits at every stage of life, it is imperative to assess the broader implications on the nation's economy and the psyche of its citizens.
According to the World Bank, as of 2023, India's GDP per capita stands at approximately $2,480.80. In contrast, countries like Indonesia, Ukraine, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand have a higher GDP per capita than India.
So Why Work ?
In the heart of rural India, where the sun blazes and time seems to slow, I encountered a 35-year-old gentleman who had mastered the art of leisure. Stationed at the local paan shop, he was engrossed in his daily ritual: savoring Rajshree, engaging in animated discussions, and watching the world drift by.
Intrigued by his unwavering commitment to relaxation, I approached him with a simple question.?
Me: "Why don’t you work?"
Gentleman: "Why work when the government works for me?"
Me: "How did you afford your wedding?"
Gentleman: "?30K from Adarsh Vivah Yojana, ?2.5L from Antyodaya Kanya Vivah Yojana! Shaadi ho gayi, EMI nahi!"
Me: "What about your kids? Don’t they need money?"
Gentleman: "Delivery is free under Janani Suraksha Yojana + ?20K under Bhagini Prasuti Yojana! Even the doctor fees come with a cashback!"

Me: "And funeral expenses?"
Gentleman: "?1 electric cremation. Even death is on discount!"

Our economy is BYOB – Build Your Own Benefits!
?Jokes apart, should welfare come with a “Work-for-It” policy? Or is this the ultimate Indian CHILL.gov.in model?
The extensive provision of government freebies, while aimed at welfare, may inadvertently contribute to a lack of motivation among the rural populace to seek employment or improve productivity. This situation not only strains the nation's fiscal resources but also perpetuates a cycle where political entities offer incentives to secure votes, potentially at the expense of long-term economic development.
Addressing these issues requires a balanced approach that ensures essential support for the needy while fostering an environment that encourages self-reliance and economic contribution among all citizens.
