Why Work in Management Consulting

Why Work in Management Consulting

There are many opinions about what consultants do, what value we provide and whether you as a company should hire consultants or not. Are you considering a transition into consulting from your current job? You might wonder why consulting is considered such a promising career by many.

If you enjoy new challenges and acquiring new knowledge from various industries, the consulting profession is a perfect role for you from my perspective. I can tell you why I chose the consulting profession and what I like so much about it!

A few key points:

Consulting is a career accelerator. Working in consulting exposes you to different industries in a fast-paced environment with the brightest minds.

-?????????Working in consulting provides high-profile exit opportunities should you choose to leave.

-?????????Experience in consulting will shape the rest of your career.

-?????????People often go into consulting for the long-term benefits it will bring to their careers.

-?????????As a consultant, we solve problems.

o??Companies often have long decision-making processes. Many work for a long time with budgets and the necessary acceptance in the organisation before projects are initiated.

o??Consultants usually only get involved when it has been decided that you want to change, build, or implement something. We, consultants, can then come in and tackle the problem.

-?????????New perspectives and the opportunity to learn many new things.

-?????????We meet and collaborate with new people at the customer's place, who often work or think differently than we are used to.

-?????????Focus on creating value and success for the customer.

o??The goal of a consultant is primarily to create value for the customer. We are not permanent employees out on assignment, so projects or engagement can be terminated if it is seen that the work is not leading – and, of course, it happens that consultants and projects do not create value.

As a graduate, it is not always easy to know what you like and wants to work with yet, so experiencing a broad number of industries in a short time as a consultant is a great way to find out what you like and don’t like doing and what interests you most.

Consulting is the perfect accelerator for almost any career. You learn a tonne (more on that in a moment!), and by gaining consulting experience, you’re considered a top talent, and several high-profile exit opportunities are open to you.

Consulting provides an unparalleled learning opportunity.

As a consultant, in just a few years, you will have experience from various industries with different clients’ most essential and complex issues. You also work with some of the brightest minds and rarely work with the same team twice so that you can learn from many different people with varying skills and expertise. That is an excellent value for your growth. Consulting work is often a high-pressured role where the learning curve is naturally steep compared to other industries. One must absorb a lot of new information and knowledge at once.

Consulting work itself is appealing.

Consulting firms often talk about their impact on their clients, whether in terms of performance improvement, additional growth, or business transformation. As a consultant, you will work with tomorrow’s solution. The variety of projects and industries you experience and the complexity of the problems you’re faced with also means you will never get bored.

Clients don’t hire consulting firms for work they could solve themselves. Essentially, they hire consultants to do their most exciting work—leaving their staff to do the more mundane stuff. As at the composition of this article, sustainability, data science, digital transformation, and supply chain excellence are some of the main focus areas for top executives.

If you are looking for a career that will allow you to make a difference and keep you entertained, you won’t be disappointed by consulting.
